New Forming Dimensions on Punching and Combination Machines
Size 5 tools as well as tools for the active die open up new forming opportunities
Stuttgart, Germany, - TRUMPF has introduced new punching tools that will enable the production of formings that are larger than ever before. And these new sizes will be achieved in two ways: First, tool developers have created a new tool size they call "Size 5," which is based on a new tool cartridge. Also, for machines with the "active die" function, there are special tools for particularly large formings.
Individual formings in new dimensions
Size 5 tools are compatible with all punching and combination machines - even those operating without additional options, like the active die option. This is made possible by a new kind of tool cartridge that allows for a different tool configuration. With an outer circle of up to 120 millimeters in the die, the tools thus offer multiple sheet metal forming options.
As a rule, Size 5 tools are custom-built. That was the case with one of the initial prototypes, a louvering tool for the production of a 101.6 millimeter (4 inches) long louver in only one stroke. Up until now, a longer louver could only be produced using a continuous louvering tool and "fast forming" machine technology because the standard louvering tool was only 60 millimeters long. With a Size 5 forming tool, customers now only require one work step which equals one-tenth of the production time. And it produces parts with outstanding quality, without processing grooves.
Even more possibilities with the active die
Also, with customized tools for the active die option at TruPunch 5000 and TruMatic 7000, formings of previously unheard-of dimensions can now be made. In addition to the tool sizes 1 and 2, there are also size 5 tools especially for the active die. Due to the fact that the die can be punched deeper, there is more space that can be used for larger and other differently configured tools. For example, TRUMPF tool developers have designed a forming tool with a completely new compression spring package that produces extrusions of 60 millimeters in diameter. Even with other kinds of formings such as a louver of 120 millimeters in length or cups and bendings, there is still extra useable space.
Beside the additional forming possibilities with the new tools, the active die allows for scratch-free processing because it can be automatically retracted and does not touch the metal sheet during positioning. This also simplifies the programming because the die is no longer a disruptive contour that the free-track systems would have to be programmed to work around. Moreover, the material can be better used. Because the tool no longer lifts the sheet metal, forming work can be done closer to the clamping claws. In addition, current tools are also compatible on the new machines with the active die.
