April 23, 2004 - Based on pulsed laser sources combined with photo-EMF sensors, Series NMM 2000 features immunity to speckle pattern, ~Hz to GHz frequency range of vibration, and working distance over 1 m. Instantaneous velocity and displacement of vibrating structures are determined from Doppler frequency shift measurement of back-scattered light without involving optical interferometers. Units are suited for aerospace, automotive, and process control industries.

Advanced Pulsed Laser Vibrometers

BRIMROSE Corporation announces a family of new pulsed laser vibrometers for non-contact vibration measurements, based on a patent pending novel technique of using pulsed laser sources with photo-EMF sensors. Some of the key features of these vibrometers are high sensitivity (~ nm vibration amplitudes with microwatt of average laser power), wide frequency range of vibration (~Hz to GHz), immunity to speckle pattern, compact and small size (210 x 175 x 65 mm), large working distance (over 1 m), robust and low power consumption. The instantaneous velocity and displacement of a vibrating structure are determined from the Doppler frequency shift measurement of back-scattered light without involving the use of conventional optical interferometers. The instrumentation can also be used in characterizing the motion of hard surfaces with extreme precision and measurement flexibility (to be presented at 12th Int. Symp. on Applications of Laser Techniques to Fluid Mechanics, Lisbon, Portugal 12 - 15 July, 2004). The high measurement sensitivity, coupled with the high degree of spatial adaptability of photo-EMF sensors, enables these pulsed laser vibrometers to be employed in a wide range of industrial applications, including aerospace, automotive and process control industries that might involve significant background noise and vibrations. The new NMM 2000 series vibrometers also offer high sensitivity monitoring of seismic movements.

The development of these vibrometers at Brimrose with such high performance specifications will enable non-contact vibration or motion measurements that are precise, simple, flexible, cost effective and rewarding than ever before. Brimrose will consider designing custom built systems to meet specific requirement needs of customers.
