December 8, 2004 - Operating in the eye-safe region near 1.54 microns, Model PF1550-36 measures 12 x 13 x 3.5 in. and can be rack-mounted or used on bench-top. Fully contained laser has all-fiber design, and power levels can be remote-controlled with PC via RS-485 port. Unit generates diffraction-limited, 3–5 ns pulses at repetition rates between 20 kHz and 1 MHz. It produces 4 W of average power at repetition rates over 50 kHz and peak powers in excess of 15 kW.

Aculight Expands Family of Pulsed Fiber Lasers for Defense, Sensing, Micromachining Applications

New Model PF1550-36 Will Be Featured at Photonics West 2005, January 25-27, in San Jose, California

BOTHELL, Wash., December 2, 2004 - Aculight Corporation, a leading developer of innovative laser technologies, has expanded its family of pulsed fiber laser products with the addition of the Model PF1550-36. Operating in the eye-safe region near 1.54-microns, the Model PF1550-36 delivers diffraction-limited, short-pulse output over a wide repetition rate range. The laser is appropriate for applications such as laser range finding, range-gated imaging, sensing and micromachining.

The Model PF1550-36 can generate 3- to 5-ns pulses at repetition rates between 20 kHz and 1 MHz, depending on user requirements. It produces 4 watts of average power at repetition rates over 50 kHz and peak powers in excess of 15 kW. The unit's 1.54-micron output from the delivery fiber is less than 1.5 times diffraction limited. The Model PF1550-36 is a fully contained laser that measures just 12 x 13 x 3.5 inches.

"The Model PF1550-36 is the newest generation in our family of rugged, eye-safe fiber lasers," said Andrew Brown, Aculight's director of business development. "We developed it to meet the needs of customers who require an easy-to-integrate laser source that generates high-power pulses and offers a wide choice of repetition rates. This type of output is usually the result of coupling a diode-pumped solid-state laser with an optical parametric oscillator. With our fiber lasers, customers gain a more efficient, durable, compact option."

The Model PF1550-36's constant average output power, high peak power, and tunable repetition rate make it ideal for applications such as range-gated imaging where users can operate at a high repetition rate to produce very detailed short-range images, or at a lower repetition rate but higher peak power to access longer ranges. In addition, the laser's near diffraction-limited output makes it attractive for applications such as micromachining, where extremely small spot size is critical.

Designed with maximum flexibility and operator convenience in mind, the Model PF1550-36 can be rack-mounted or used bench-top. Users can tailor the laser's pulse shape for best results in their respective applications. Power levels can be remote-controlled with a PC via RS-485 port.

Since the device has an all-fiber design it is virtually maintenance free, allowing it to operate in even the most demanding environments. Said Brown, "Because fiber lasers are inherently much more robust than many conventional lasers, they lend themselves to rugged, demanding operation. Fiber lasers are high-performance sources that can be much more reliable for military and industrial applications."

Founded in 1993, Aculight Corporation develops and manufactures innovative laser technologies for medical, industrial and national defense applications. Aculight's technology portfolio includes fiber lasers, diode-pumped solid-state lasers, nonlinear optics, and external cavity diode lasers.
