Sonic Launches HD QuickStart Program

Provides Affordable Entry Point into High-Definition Authoring

NOVATO, Calif., Sept. 6 / / -- Sonic Solutions(R) (NASDAQ:SNIC), the leader in digital media software, today introduced a new program that arms multimedia professionals and authoring facilities with the tools and support they need to initiate high-definition title production. The Sonic HD QuickStart Program(TM) consists of special versions of Scenarist(R) and CineVision(TM), the company's acclaimed professional authoring and encoding applications, as well as educational white papers that cover all aspects of the new formats and a comprehensive range of informative live and web-based training and support services. The program finally addresses the needs of non-studio-aligned post production facilities, independent videographers, and film makers looking for an effective and affordable way to publish content in one or both high-definition disc formats.

"By lowering the cost of entry, the Sonic HD QuickStart Program has made high-definition authoring accessible to a far broader range of multimedia professionals," said Paul Stellingwerff, VP of TransTec bv in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. "By providing a comprehensive set of products and information that simplifies complex interactive title preparation, Sonic's program is the ideal introductory solution for new HD publishers."

The Sonic HD QuickStart Program offers packages for HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc title creation. The HD DVD package includes a comprehensive range of features for creating highly-interactive feature programming that takes full advantage of the format's Advanced Content mode. These features allow authors to seamlessly overlay rich menus on the main video program, include picture-in-picture elements, and even incorporate Web-enabled content that can be accessed by viewers using an HD DVD player's Ethernet port. The BD package is tailored for the creation of Blu-ray Disc HDMV titles with fine-tuning controls over BD player functions and a built-in interactive graphics effects editor.

Both packages include Sonic's CineVision encoding platform that provides cinema-quality MPEG-2 HD stream creation, tools for segment-based re-encoding, and support for Constant Bit Rate, Variable Bit Rate, and Constant Quality VBR encode styles. CineVision also offers ExpressQC(TM) segment-marking functionality, which significantly improves quality control efficiency.

"For every production level, from desktop videographers to independent film producers, our new HD QuickStart Program is the perfect way to initiate high-definition compression and authoring services backed by industry-proven solutions from Sonic," said Rolf Hartley, senior vice president and general manager of Sonic's Professional Products Group. "With millions of high-definition displays in use worldwide, and the rapid adoption of inexpensive HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc players hitting the market, this is the perfect time for the launch of a program that will help increase the number of high-definition service providers available to content owners."
