EDS Launches PLM Open Platform; New Software Package Strengthens Open, Interoperability Strategy

New Architecture Enables Manufacturers to Optimize Their Business Processes Across Entire Product Lifecycle

PLANO, Texas - EDS today launched PLM Open, a new software package offering manufacturers the ability to more effectively integrate enhanced automation technology throughout their product lifecycle management (PLM) environments than they can with existing software packages.

This new software platform provides an architectural foundation facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing among all EDS PLM Solutions products. PLM Open also will enable numerous other PLM products to "plug and play" in a heterogeneous, product development environment.

"The PLM Open platform allows companies to seamlessly combine and globally deploy among their customers, suppliers and partners the broad suite of software solutions needed to create innovative, market-driven products," said Chuck Grindstaff, president, EDS PLM Products. "PLM Open delivers process efficiencies enabling companies to deliver better products to their markets faster and with less cost."

Launch Builds on Interoperability Strategy

The launch of the PLM Open builds on EDS PLM Solutions' open, interoperability strategy. The company launched in October 2001 a new software solution providing unprecedented interoperability between its two premier computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering (CAD/CAM/CAE) applications.

That software enables organizations working with the Unigraphics product from the former Unigraphics Solutions (UGS) or the I-DEAS product from the former Structural Dynamics Research Corporation (SDRC) to use either application to directly access and work with models from either application in an interoperable environment. EDS launched PLM Solutions, combining the former UGS and SDRC, on October 1, 2001.

Core products from EDS PLM Solutions, including the Teamcenter family of collaboration software and the Unigraphics NX total product engineering technologies, utilize PLM Open as their foundational platform. PLM Open is built upon the latest, open Web Services standards, such as J2EE (Java 2 Enterprise Edition from Sun Microsystems) and Microsoft's .NET, and provides a flexible technology platform that accommodates software solutions from many other providers.

"PLM Open is the next generation of solutions in our 'open by design' strategy that we have been delivering over the last few years," Grindstaff said. "PLM Open combines our PLM XML, PLM Integrator and industry-leading technology plug-ins, such as Parasolid and PLM Vis, providing manufacturers with a flexible platform to optimize their product development within an integrated business decision-support environment.

"The user community will realize benefits in reduced cost of ownership, increased deployment flexibility, guaranteed interoperability and world class scalability and performance."
