Micrel's New Family of High-Current, Low-Voltage, Protected-Power Distribution Switches with Input Voltages Down to 0.8V

• Highest current rating of any integrated protected power switch
• Breaks the 1V and below operating barrier

SAN JOSE, Calif. - (January 22, 2004) - Two new power control solutions for stationary and portable electronic systems such as PCs, servers, laptops and protected battery packs are introduced by Micrel Semiconductor (Nasdaq: MCRL) an industry leader in the design and manufacture of integrated circuits for the analog, power management, and high-speed communication markets.

The MIC204x family offers the highest performance, smallest size and most efficient power management solution for electronic power control in the industry today. MIC2044/45, the first two members in this new family of monolithic high-side power-switches, achieve record setting performance in both current handling ability and low voltage operation. Until now, power-switching solutions handling currents in excess of 3A required the use of external power FETs. The MIC2044/45 has improved that by integrating a unique, high-efficiency NMOS pass element with control circuitry into a TSSOP package to control load currents in excess of 6A. "These are really incredible devices for their size and performance. The NMOS FET switch is so efficient that in a typical 20mOhm device, the heavy duty bond wires and package leads account for more than half of the total ON resistance," said Thruston Awalt, product marketing manager.

Further, MIC2044/45 will operate with input voltages as low as 0.8V, also an industry first. "The march toward sub-lV power supplies continues unabated. MIC2044/45's ability to operate with inputs below IV make today's designs forward compatible with
tomorrow's microprocessor and ASIC technologies," added Await.

A rich feature set making MIC2044/45 the ideal solution for a wide range of applications compliments this unprecedented performance. First and foremost, MIC2044/45 is a current-limiting device, and the user has full control over the limiting
point by the selection of a single external reference resistor. The power switches are fully self-protected, incorporating on-chip temperature sensing and shutdown circuitry to keep both the device and the load safe under short circuit or catastrophic failure conditions. Response to a fault can be either to limit the load current supplied, as in the case of the MIC2044, or to act like a circuit breaker (MIC2045) and shut off all current to the load until the fault condition has cleared and then re-energize (auto-retry).

For system applications requiring soft start, to limit RFI and prevent glitching the system power mains, MIC2044/45 offers slew rate control, allowing the load to be brought online gracefully instead of abruptly.

User-controlled UVLO (Under Voltage Lock Out) ensures no power is applied to the load until the input supplies have reached their full operational value and a Power Good output comparator signals when the load has achieved it's intended operating voltage.

Power to the load can by cycled on-off by toggling the ENABLE input, making the MIC2044/45 ideal for hot swapping and power sequencing applications. "These are truly versatile devices, and very easy to use," adds Awalt.

In thousand-piece quantities, the MIC2044/45 starts at $2.22 each. Samples are from stock, and production quantities are stock to 8 weeks ARO.
