Powder X-ray Diffractometer is suited for semiconductors.

Press Release Summary:

ARL X'TRA includes goniometer and Peltier-cooled Si(Li) solid-state detector together with easy-to-mount optics. Energy resolution removes need for traditional KSS filter and monochromators as undesired source lines, and sample fluorescence can be electronically discriminated. Designed with vertical Theta:Theta geometry, system uses WinXRD true 32-bit data collection and analysis package, which runs under Windows(TM) NT/2000.

Original Press Release:

The ARL X'TRA: A Recent Generation of Powder X-Ray Diffractometer with Exclusive Technology

Winsford, CHESHIRE, England (April 11, 2003) - The ARL X'TRA is a high performance Powder X-ray Diffractometer and forms a vital part of Thermo Electron Corporation's wide range of analytical instruments for phase and structural analysis. It offers the latest technology in key diffraction components. Indeed, the new engineering design of the goniometer and the exclusive Peltier-cooled Si(Li) solid-state detector together with easy-to-mount optics are combined to produce a high performance instrument at an affordable price. The superior energy resolution of this detector removes the need for traditional KB filter and monochromators as the undesired source (tube) lines and the sample fluorescence can be electronically discriminated. This elegant method produces higher diffraction intensities and/or superior resolution compared to traditional diffractometers.

The ARL X'TRA is also designed with the vertical Theta:Theta geometry (Bragg-Brentano) for convenient sample preparation and sample handling. In addition, use of accessories, sample holders and other optional attachments is greatly simplified by this geometry.

In conjunction with this basic system, various options such as multiple position sample changers, parabolic mirrors, high or low temperature chambers, parallel beam attachments for thin films, half circle goniometer etc. are available. The ARL X'TRA diffractometer will serve many applications, but is particularly targeted to fulfill the needs in the following areas:

o Pharmaceuticals;
o Earth sciences and mining;
o Material science research;
o Chemical laboratories and production of chemicals;
o Petrochemicals and polymers;
o Metallurgy;
o Cement and building materials;
o Semiconductors and thin films.

The ARL X'TRA system uses WinXRD software, which is a true 32-bit data collection and analysis package running under Windows(TM) NT/2000. In summary, the distinguishing features of the ARL X'TRA are:

o Theta:Theta geometry greatly simplifies sample preparation, offers more stable alignment as the tube is mounted on the goniometer and is the most flexible base for future expansion;
o Peltier detector increases sensitivity to weak phases which can be critically important and can collect data more rapidly than conventional detectors;
o Larger goniometer radius increases resolution - important for samples with severe peak overlap and improves low angle performance.
