Climax Portable Machine Tools, Inc. Introduces the LM6000 Portable Linear Mill

New compact machine offers greater performance for aggressive field milling in any axis

NEWBERG, Oregon, and Duren, Germany, November 9, 2006 - Climax Portable Machine Tools, Inc., a strategic provider of comprehensive, on-site machining solutions, announces the LM6000, Climax's most powerful portable milling machine to date. The LM6000 has been designed to handle demanding and difficult field machining conditions through features that ensure greater power, accuracy and precision.

The LM6000 was developed to meet increasing market demand for a more aggressive and powerful portable milling machine that covers various work requirements. It is part of a broad lineup of mill options from Climax targeted to equipment repair applications involving milling of critical mounting surfaces. Climax is receiving orders for the LM6000 through its headquarters in Oregon, the European headquarters in Germany, and through its network of distributors worldwide.

"The LM6000 offers the maximum flexibility to customers who have diverse needs in milling," said Climax CEO Geoff Gilmore, Ph.D., P.E. "The product meets our goal to develop innovative on-site solutions that help our clients complete their toughest jobs in a quick and cost-effective manner."

The LM6000 is ideal for use in resurfacing press platens or pockets in large presses, hammers and injection molding machines; precision surface finishes of fabrication weldments to establish true equipment mounting surfaces, milling the large rectangular surfaces of pads for mounting construction winches, cranes and turbines used in construction or retrofit; machining pump bases in process industries, or remachining motor mounts at power generation facilities.

High Level of Rigidity
The rigid welded steel bed of the LM6000 was designed using computerized Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to provide maximum structural integrity and minimize sag and torsional twisting. The bed is 2.5 times more rigid than previous models. This greater rigidity enables machinists to achieve very close tolerance levels in milling not only under conventional machining conditions, but also for over-head work operations.

Faster, More Powerful Design
The LM6000's new heavy duty spindle allows metal removal rates of up to 7.0 cubic inches (114.8 cubic cm) per minute with an 8.0 inches (203.2 mm) diameter cutter and a 25Hp (18.6 kW) hydraulic power unit, for fast milling even in the vertical orientation. In addition, a new rapid advance feature allows customers to quickly move the milling spindle to the area to be machined.

Enhanced Accuracy and Precision
The LM6000 also has an increased level of accuracy and precision. Both the X & Y Axes utilize hardened square ways which are precision ground and hardened for accuracy and durability. In addition, the unique self-cleaning ball screw drive system and advanced electric motor design provide smooth and powerful drive capability, and an optional Z axis power drive is also available.

Portability
The smaller vertical dimensions of the LM6000 make the device more compact. Feed boxes for each axis are mounted using a clamping system that requires only one screw to mount. Since the feed may be rotated and clamped in any 360 degree position, it avoids work area obstacles. Feeds can also be mounted on either end of the Ram or Bed. These features enable customers to bring the LM6000 to previously inaccessible areas, and do the machining in-place.

The LM6000 (http://cpmt.com/docs/pm/LM6000.pdf) features main bed travel lengths (X-axis) from 48.0 inches (1219.2 mm) to 144.0 inches(3657.6 mm); Ram assembly travel (Y-axis) of 24.0 inches (609.6 mm) or 36.0 inches (914.4 mm); Spindle assembly (Z-axis) travel in 4.0 or 8.0 inches (101.6 or 203.2 mm) and Hydraulic or Pneumatic power options; and feed rate of 0.4 to 20.0 inches/minute (10.2 - 508.0 mm/minute). A single pendant control panel (integrated with the Hydraulic Power Unit) provides power control to all three axes and spindle, and includes an instant rapid advance button.
