California Micro Devices Announces Its Third Generation HDMI(TM) Port Protection Solutions with MediaGuard(TM)

Support Latest Advanced HDMI(TM) 1.3 Requirements

MILPITAS, Calif., Sept. 5 // -- California Micro Devices (NASDAQ:CAMD) today announced its latest MediaGuard family of integrated port protection solutions for high speed HDMI(TM) (High-Definition Multimedia Interface(TM)) 1.3 interfaces in digital consumer devices such as digital TVs, DVD and recordable DVD players, flat panel monitors, set top boxes, personal computers and video game consoles. These newest MediaGuard products integrate ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection, backdrive protection, overcurrent protection, voltage level shifting, as well as active DDC pullups and CEC slew rate limiting. The MediaGuard CM2030 and CM2031 multifunction ASIP(TM) (Application Specific Integrated Passive(TM)) devices support the latest advanced HDMI(TM) 1.3 requirements including higher speeds, as well as CEC enhancements and extended length cable support. The CM2030 is intended for source applications such as DVD recorders and set top boxes, while the CM2031 is intended for receiver applications such as digital TVs.

Key Features

The MediaGuard CM2030 and CM2031 provide low capacitance ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection for all 12 data lines, featuring the industry's lowest capacitance 0.9 pF ESD diode arrays. They represent a complete HDMI(TM) protection and signal integrity solution to support the advanced features for HDMI(TM) 1.3, including backdrive protection and electrical isolation on all signals, level shifting circuits for DDC, hot plug and CEC lines and overcurrent protection per HDMI(TM) spec for source ports (CM2030). Slew rate limiting on the CEC lines helps to minimize ringing and EMI (electromagnetic interference), while the dynamic DDC pullups allow longer and less expensive cables to be used. The CM2030 and CM2031 also feature multiport DDC support, eliminating the need for an external analog switch when addressing multiple EEPROMs.

The CM2030 and CM2031 are ideal complements to the latest HDMI(TM) 1.3 transmitters/receivers from companies such as Silicon Image.

"We selected CMD's MediaGuard parts for our latest HDMI(TM) reference design and evaluation boards because they provide unmatched signal integrity, port protection and integration," stated Rob Frizzell, director HDMI product marketing at Silicon Image, Inc., a leader in the secure distribution, presentation and storage of high definition content.

"Building on the proven success of our industry leading PicoGuard(TM) diode arrays and MediaGuard CM2020 and CM2021 HDMI(TM) solutions, these new devices provide a complete port protection and signal integrity solution to support the advanced features for HDMI(TM) 1.3," stated Joe Salvador, director of marketing for computing and digital consumer products at California Micro Devices.

Pricing and Availability

The CM2030 and CM2031 are available in a space saving 38-pin TSSOP package. They are currently sampling, with production scheduled for Q4 of this year. Pricing starts at $1.31 each in 1,000 units for the CM2030, and at $1.29 each in 1,000 units for the CM2031.
