New GUR® X 192 Macropowder from Ticona Expands Porous Plastic Design Possibilities for Filtration
Press release date: October 25, 2010
Florence, Ky., Kelsterbach, Germany, Shanghai, PR China, - Ticona today announced the development of GUR®X 192 Macropowder, a new porous plastic powder. Sintered products produced with this new material have excellent porosity and good strength for use in a variety of filtration applications for liquids and gases that require higher flow rates, lower pressure drops and increased part strength.
New GUR X 192 Macropowder will be showcased at K 2010, Ticona Booth, Hall 06/A07 and Hall 06/B07, from Wednesday to Nov. 3 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
"Our customers asked for a larger design space that will allow them to develop more innovative porous filtration products," said Ramesh Srinivasan, global segment manager for GUR porous, Ticona. "After intensive research and development, Ticona scientists created the new GUR X 192 VHMW (very-high molecular weight) polyethylene polymer that stretches the envelope of porous part properties to encompass applications across a wide spectrum of industries." New Porous Plastic Powder - Sanning electron microspcope image shows the characteristics of sintered GUR® X 192 Macropowder from Ticona Engineering Polymers.
GUR X 192 Macropowder offers the following material properties:
o Molecular Weight - 600,000 grams per moles(g/mol) as determined by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) 1628/Margolies
o Particle Size Distribution - 451 d50micrometer (µm) as determined by Helos Laser Scattering
o Bulk Density - 0.35 grams per milliliter (g/ml)as determined by DIN European Standard (EN ISO) 60
o Pore Size - 205 µm as determined by DIN 66133
o Porosity - 47 percent as determined by DIN 66133
At the heart of this new polyethylene resin is a patent pending break through technology developed by Ticona scientists. It enables the material to be shaped and sintered - 180 to 220 degrees Celsius (356 to 428 degrees Fahrenheit) -into porous objects with improved strength and porosity.
Key advantages of GUR X 192 Macropowder include:
o Achieve higher flow rate while reducing pressure drop
o Designed-in pore volume
o Enables composite sintering
o Excellent for low temperature applications
o Reduced processing time and cost
o Eco-friendly (no scrap)
o Increased quality and consistency (parts performas designed)
According to Srinivasan, "GUR X 192 Macropowder will broaden the design space for Ticona customers who want to develop different types of porous applications that are beyond the capabilities of traditional materials," including standard high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE).
Possible applications include:
o Waste water treatment
o Water purification
o Medical fluid filtration
o Drug manufacturing
o Chemical filtration
o Oil and gas production
o Oil and water separation
o Hydraulic filtration
o Sediment filtration
o Writing instruments
Ticona is the largest global supplier of UHMW-PE. Its portfolio of GUR UHMW-PE products is the broadest available in the marketplace, with each grade providing a specific range of particle morphology, size and size distribution profile to help meet the balance of strength and pressure requirements specific to each filter application. Innovative uses include filters for air, gases and liquid. The use of Ticona GUR UHMW-PE can enhance the design of filters to effectively remove chlorine, particulates and microorganisms, as well as reduce volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and microorganisms in point-of-use / point-of-entry drinking water applications.
