Decontactor Series Plugs and Receptacles Achieve 100,000 Amp Short Circuit Ratings
FRANKLIN, WI (June 23, 2005) Meltric Corporation of Franklin, WI, a manufacturer of industrial duty electrical plugs and receptacles is pleased to announce that it’s Decontactor™ Series plugs and receptacles are now rated to make and withstand short circuit currents up to 100,000 amps. These test results are of significant importance because closing into a fault with a standard electrical plug can lead to serious arc flash injury. By utilizing Decontactors to connect welders, motors, and other electrical equipment users can now be confident that they will be protected if they accidentally plug into a short circuit.
Decontactors are the only plugs and receptacles that are rated to make and withstand in 100 kA short circuit conditions. This new rating far exceeds that offered by competitive pin and sleeve or twist type plugs and receptacles. Decontactors even offer greater short circuit protection than most interlocked receptacles and many enclosed switches.
Decontactor Series plugs and receptacles help maintain the electrically safe work environment required in the NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. Each Decontactor is UL switch rated, an integral switching mechanism ensures the safe make or break of live connections and makes certain that the contacts are dead before the plug can be removed. Once the plug is withdrawn users are protected from unintentional access to live parts by the receptacles safety shutter. Safety is also maintained when re-inserting the plug into the receptacle because the male contacts do not engage the live female contacts until after they are fully enclosed inside the device’s arc chambers, thus preventing outside exposure to arc flash.
100 kA short circuit rated Decontactor Series plugs and receptacles are available in 20, 30, 60, and 100 amp sizes. The 100kA short circuit tests were performed at a 0.15 power factor with RK1 current limiting fuses sized at 400% of the full load motor ampacity for the device’s associated horsepower rating in accordance with UL Subject 2682 – Switch Rated Plugs and Receptacles.
