October 5, 2009 - Optimized for pipe fabrication, PipeWorx(TM) Welding System performs stick, TIG, MIG, and flux cored welding. Switching between processes is almost instantaneous, with no need to manually switch polarity, cables, or hoses, eliminating potential source of errors. Up to 4 programs can be stored for each process, and processes can be shared among different machines via memory card. Quick Set technology sets correct polarity and returns to last settings for that process.

Change Welding Processes in Seconds With Miller's PipeWorx(TM) Pipe Welding System

Miller's PipeWorx(TM) Pipe Welding System is an easy-to-use multi-process welding solution specifically designed for use in pipe fabrication shops to improve pipe welding quality and productivity. It provides simple process setup, quick process changeover and reduced training time.

Highlights/Key Facts:

o Simple, easy-to-use interface designed by pipe welders for pipe welders.

o One-button, quick changeover between processes. PipeWorx(TM) selects the correct output studs, gas and polarity. Cables remain connected to the power source and do not need to be switched for the different welding processes.

o Stick, TIG, flux cored and MIG processes are each optimized for pipe welding. There's no need to have multiple welding machines in the welding cell.

o Streamlined system eliminates cables, and those that are left are easily stored using an innovative cable and gun storage system for a cleaner, more organized weld cell.

o Enables even new welders to produce code-quality welds quickly and with less training.

APPLETON, Wis.-Miller Electric Mfg. Co. introduces the PipeWorx(TM) Welding System, a multi-process welding system designed for use in pipe fabrication shops to provide unrivaled ease-of-use and exceptional pipe-welding performance with quick, one-button changeover between processes. The PipeWorx System's Stick, TIG, MIG (including Miller's RMD(TM) and ProPulse(TM) technologies) and flux cored processes have been optimized specifically for pipe fabrication. Switching between the processes is almost instantaneous, with no need to manually switch polarity, cables or hoses, thus increasing productivity and eliminating a potential source of errors. The PipeWorx System's ease-of-use and optimized weld processes enable even new welders to produce code-quality welds quickly and with less training.

Setting up a new process requires only a few simple steps, resulting in quicker training times and reducing the chance for input errors. Operators need only select the desired process and, as applicable, the electrode or wire, the gas, the voltage and the wire feed speed. Up to four programs can be stored for each process, and processes can be shared among different machines via a memory card. The front panel, designed by pipe welders for pipe welders, is clearly labeled, easy to use and provides only the controls necessary for the task at hand. To eliminate confusion, only backlit controls are adjustable.

Since all cables remain connected to the unit and do not need to be switched for the different welding processes, changing between processes can save several minutes per weld joint, as compared to changing processes with older technology. Quick Set technology automatically sets the correct polarity and returns to the last settings for that process. An innovative storage system keeps cables organized when not in use and helps eliminate the potential for incorrect or loose connections that could lead to weld defects, as with other systems.

The PipeWorx Welding System comes ready to weld out-of-the-box for immediate productivity.

Miller Product Manager Quotes:

"We conducted extensive research with pipe fabrication shops and training facilities throughout the country to find out what they sought in a welder. The result is the PipeWorx Welding System. All of the components, processes and controls have been designed to boost productivity, improve weld quality and simplify operator training in a pipe fabrication shop." Mike Roth, Marketing manager, Miller Electric Mfg. Co.

Additional Information

Productive Processes

RMD(TM) (Regulated Metal Deposition) and Pro-Pulse(TM) are patented Miller MIG technologies that provide a complete solution for welding from root to fill and cap passes. The two processes can use the same wire and gas to eliminate process changeover time, and both are easier to learn than conventional MIG processes, helping address operator training issues. Both RMD and ProPulse maintain a consistent arc length regardless of stick-out. Thus, they compensate for operators that have problems holding a constant stick-out, and promotes consistent weld quality.

RMD is a modified short circuit transfer MIG welding technology that promotes smoother metal transfer, prevents excess puddle agitation and lowers heat input, allowing it to overcome less-than-ideal fit-up (gaps) and potentially eliminates the need for a hot pass.

In addition, RMD has the potential to eliminate the need for a backing gas when welding stainless steel and chrome moly steels. Since the shielding gas remains relatively undisturbed during its transfer, enough shielding gas gets pushed through the root opening to prevent oxidation.

Pro-Pulse is a pulsed MIG process that provides a shorter, narrower arc cone with less heat input that traditional pulsed MIG welding, providing improved fusion and fill at the toe of the weld and permitting faster travel speeds with higher deposition for the fill and cap passes. Because it is a synergic process, the operator needs to adjust one control for optimal results.
