McElroy Introduces MegaMc® Pipe Stands



Two new models boost productivity on 8- to 65-inch (225 - 1,600mm) job sites

TULSA, Okla. - Most pipelining job sites require a mix of heavy machinery to maneuver pipes into place. McElroy's new MegaMc® Pipe Stands are self-contained, gasoline-powered pipe stands that alleviate a piece of heavy machinery to hold the pipe in place.

Two models are available. A large 36- to 65-inch (900 - 1,600mm) model accommodates pipes up to 16,000 lbs. (7,257 Kg), while a smaller 8- to 36-inch (225 - 900mm) model handles pipe up to 9,000 lbs. (4,082 Kg).

Besides the productivity gained from allowing heavy machinery to be used elsewhere on the site, the MegaMc Pipe Stands offer 24 inches of lateral movement, as well as 34 inches of vertical adjustability. This freedom of movement allows the operator to maneuver the stick of pipe to the height of a thermoplastic pipe fusion machine.

The MegaMc Pipe Stands are gasoline-powered but won't churn through gas. In fact, the units are designed to hold a set height after the operator turns the hydraulic power unit off. Since the unit is self-contained, no hydraulic hoses will be running across the ground of the job site. Rugged rollers with low-friction pillow block bearings allow the pipe to move easily. Even with a wide stable base, the pipe stands can be stacked for storage or shipping and are moveable with a forklift or crane.

About Pipe Fusion:

Pipe fusion is a widely accepted process that joins two pieces of thermoplastic pipe together with heat and pressure. Commonly associated with high-density polyethylene pipe (HDPE), the butt fusion process starts by "facing" or shaving the pipe ends simultaneously so that they can be joined together with heat to create a continuous, sealed pipeline. The welding of the pipes is accomplished by using a hot plate in contact with the pipe ends, which heats the plastic to a molten state. Then, after its removal, the ends are pressed together under a controlled force to form a weld that is stronger than the pipe itself. Third-party industry research indi¬cates that HDPE pipe and joints can have a lifespan of more than 100 years.
