Pinch/Peel Grinder optimizes concentricity on long/thin parts.
August 4, 2010 -
Incorporating fifth axis, ShapeSmart NP5 can grind flats and unround surfaces on cylindrical parts. Machine utilizes 2 different grinding wheels running on separate spindles and positioned on independently controlled CNC linear slides. Roughing and finishing are performed in one pass, eliminating separate process. Applications include form grinding of cutting tools blanks as well as production grinding of precision punches and die and mold components.

Rollomatic Spotlights New 5-axis Pinch/Peel Grinder at IMTS 2010
Mundelein, Rollomatic, a leading machine tool manufacturer based in Le Landeron, Switzerland, is exhibiting at the IMTS (International Manufacturing Technology Show) in September in Chicago, IL.
Rollomatic continues the success and growth of its ShapeSmart pinch/peel grinder by announcing the addition of a 5-axis grinder model NP5. The ShapeSmart NP5 is a further development based on the Cylindrical Grinding Machine NP4 which is designed and dedicated for cylindrical grinding of carbide, HSS and stainless steel components with emphasis on highest achievable surface finish and concentricity. The NP5 is utilizing the proven method of "pinch and peel" grinding. It includes a fifth axis which facilitates grinding flats and unround surfaces on cylindrical parts.
Pinch grinding offers highest concentricity even on long and thin parts. The rough and finish grinding are performed in one pass (patented). This innovative way to grind roughing and finishing simultaneously eliminates a separate process and reduces cycle time. The machine utilizes two different grinding wheels running on separate spindles and positioned on independently-controlled CNC linear slides.
