Photodiode monitors output of semiconductor lasers.

Press Release Summary:

Silicon PIN photodiode monitors short wavelength lasers, such as 980 nm diodes used for EDFA pumping. It is supplied as bare die soldered to ceramic block, facilitating integration of photodiode together with laser into standard telecommunications packages. Soldering avoids use of organic adhesives, which can outgas over time, eventually contaminating source. Active area is 0.7 x 1.0 mm.

Original Press Release:

OEM Monitor Photodiodes for 980 nm Pump Lasers

Advanced Photonix, Inc.® (Camarillo, CA) has introduced a new series of silicon PIN photodiodes specifically designed for monitoring the output power of short wavelength semiconductor lasers, such as 980 nm diodes used for EDFA pumping. These OEM detectors are typically supplied as a bare die soldered to a ceramic block; this compact configuration facilitates integration of the photodiode together with the laser into standard telecommunications packages.

The materials used in these products are selected to provide the extreme longevity required by typical telecom applications. For example, the detector die is soldered to its mount, thereby avoiding the use of organic adhesives, which can outgas over time, eventually contaminating the source and reducing lifetime
and reliability. In addition, this ceramic mount is metallized on both ends so that the detector can be readily soldered on its end to the same substrate as the source laser. Ease of use is further enhanced by the generous 0.7 mm x 1.0 mm active area of these detectors, which simplifies optical alignment.

In addition to this standard configuration, Advanced Photonix can also produce detectors in a wide variety of custom configurations and packages. These detectors can even be produced in monolithic arrays.
