Flexicon's Flexi 6818 Peelable Lid Stock for Thermoformed Trays Features Two-Sided Printing

Cary, Ill. (April 7, 2005)-Flexicon, an Ampac company, launches Flexi 6818, a peelable lid stock for thermoformed PET trays.

The Flexi 6818 lamination features heat-seal coated polyester coupled with metalized, white oriented polypropylene. In addition to good barrier properties, the new film offers several advantages to competitive laminations in the marketplace.

Key among them is Flexicon's ability to produce two-sided print. The company can print 10-color process jobs using the newest state-of-the-art impression drum press. The front side can be used for high-end consumer graphics while the back side can feature print that can be held in register with the front-side artwork. This is possible because the company has successfully tackled the reregistering challenge which has eluded most U.S. converters.

The significance to the packager of two-sided printing is that the outer facing can be printed with aesthetically pleasing graphics for shelf impact, while the reverse side can be used for secondary copy such as safety cautions, couponing, etc.

The ability to produce the lamination with 100% opacity further insures that even in an intense lighting situation the view will not be "contaminated." The copy on the reverse side will not show through the front facing (and visa versa) which is not the case with standard laminations. Additionally, if a clear product is put in a transparent PET tray, the copy on the reverse side can be read "through" the tray and contents prior to removing the lidding.

The ability to use both sides of the lamination to convey information also helps eliminate the need for additional labeling costs.

Flexi 6818 can be sealed around the face of the tray leaving a corner exposed to grab and pull for easy product access. It also features good strength characteristics which eliminate film tear upon opening and good puncture resistance to minimize retailer rejection due to packaging failure.

Additionally, the structure features Flexicon's Flexi-Free(TM) solventless technology which is made possible by custom-designed laminating equipment coupled with breakthroughs in adhesive formulation.

Flexicon's Flexi 6818 is an ideal lid stock for consumer goods (razors, toothbrushes and other toiletries) and solid or semi-solid products (food items, room freshener gels, etc.). The material is a good compliment for either an opaque or transparent PET tray which has been designed as a standup shelf item or has a hanging profile.

Additionally, the laminate has been engineered for superior sealing and machinability. This enables optimum production speeds thereby maximizing plant efficiency.

Flexicon is known for its ability to create unique, custom-engineered structures, including adhesive laminations, Flexi-Free(TM) solventless laminations, heat-seal coated rollstock, flexographic printing, pouching and perforated tear products.

Founded in 1976, Flexicon is an operating unit of Ampac Packaging LLC. Flexicon is an industry leader in developing and producing the most technologically advanced flexible packaging materials available. The company is headquartered in Cary, Ill. and operates a 65,000 sq. ft. facility with multiple laminators, printing, perforating, slitting and pouching equipment.

The company is the premier manufacturer of high-performance, flexible packaging materials to the pharmaceutical, medical, healthcare, chemical, food and industrial markets. For additional information: www.flexiconinc.net.
