September 30, 2010 - Utilizing ABN technology, Passive Matrix LCDs provide true black level by minimizing light leakage, resulting in contrast ratios up to 1,000:1. Units exhibit practically no color shift, enabling any backlight color to be used without compromising contrast ratio. Equipped with standard 8-bit parallel interface, 20 x 2 character Model C-55605GNFU-LW-AAN features 600 cd/m² brightness and contrast ratio of 550:1.

Optrex Introduces First Standard Passive Matrix LCD with Advanced Black Nematic Technology for Enhanced Performance

Plymouth, MI, - Leading LCD designer and manufacturer Optrex Corp. (Tokyo, Japan) and Optrex America, Inc., its sales and marketing channel in the Americas, have introduced the first passive matrix LCD with Advanced Black Nematic (ABN) technology.

LCDs with ABN technology provide higher contrast ratios and wider viewing angles than conventional passive matrix displays, with true black levels, no performance shift over wide temperature ranges, and virtually no color shift.

"The passive matrix monochrome LCD market remains a significant focus for Optrex," noted Optrex America President & CEO, Cynthia Ferrell. "While some LCD manufacturers have decided to exit the passive LCD market, Optrex continues to support it with new developments such as Advanced Black Nematic technology."

Conventional passive matrix displays offer limited performance, such as brightness of less than 100 cd/m2 and contrast ratio of less than 80:1, which are not acceptable for some applications. As a result, Vacuum Florescent Display (VFD) technology has been prevalent in many automotive and certain industrial applications. However, LCDs utilizing ABN technology can achieve performance equal to or better than VFD. They provide a true black level by dramatically reducing the light leakage, resulting in contrast ratios of up to 1000:1, super wide viewing angles, and no performance shift over a wide temperature range. Because LCDs with ABN technology exhibit practically no color shift, any backlight color can be used without compromising the contrast ratio.

ABN was originally developed by Optrex for custom modules used in automotive applications. Its first standard passive LCD with ABN technology - C-55605GNFU-LW-AAN - is a 20 x 2 character display with 600 cd/m2 brightness, a contrast ratio of 550:1, and standard 8-bit parallel interface. This marks the first time that a passive matrix monochrome display has offered such a high level of performance.

Sample pricing for the C-55605GNFU-LW-AAN is under $30. For additional pricing information, contact Jessica He at jhe@optrexusa.com. For more information about Optrex's cutting edge LCD display technologies, please visit www.optrex.com .
