August 9, 2011 - Using laser diffraction to measure particles from 0.1-2,500 microns, Insitec L provides real-time measurement of solid and liquid particulates in dilute and concentrated liquid streams such as pharmaceuticals and minerals. Analyzer incorporates telephoto lens, which combines stability, optical alignment, and vibration tolerance. Unit features triclamping and uses 316L stainless steel in manufacture of all metal parts, making it suited for use in GAMP4 processes and where CIP/SIP is required.

Field Experience and New Measurement Challenges Drive Enhancements to Malvern's Insitec L

Rugged, reliable particle size measurement of slurries and emulsions

Malvern, UK: Working in conjunction with mineral and metallurgical processing specialists Outotec (Espoo, Finland), and following more than a year's experience in the field, Malvern Instruments has introduced a new version of the Insitec L particle size analyzer.

The Insitec L provides a robust solution for real-time measurement of slurries and emulsions and has been further engineered for extra ruggedness to meet increasingly demanding applications and to reduce maintenance to the absolute minimum.

The Insitec L has been tested extensively in the most arduous of minerals applications to ensure that it successfully and reliably meets the requirements of this, and many other industrial sectors, for real-time particle size measurement. It is being used in key unit operations, including milling, to deliver enhanced process monitoring and control: increasing throughput, reducing waste and lowering energy consumption.

Using laser diffraction to measure particles from 0.1 to 2500 microns, the new Insitec L incorporates a unique telephoto lens that has both extended the measurement range and brings improved stability and rugged optical alignment, as well as greater vibration tolerance, temperature robustness, and reduced space requirement, without compromising measurement quality at lower size limits.

Insitec L uses the proven technology of laser diffraction for particle size measurement. Implemented in a range of Malvern systems, this rapid and non-destructive particle sizing technique is used to measure dry powder streams, emulsions, slurries and sprays. Fully automated systems for on-plant use, exemplified by the Insitec range, incorporate sample preparation hardware and data management software to streamline integration within the process. By measuring particle size at a sufficiently high frequency to capture process changes in fine detail this technology enables better manual operation and opens up a route to automated process control.
