New HLT Filters Eliminate Contaminants, Maximizing Performance of Vacuum Systems and Mass Spectrometer Helium Leak Detectors
Helium Leak Testing, Inc. (HLT), a national provider of helium leak detection systems and services announced its new line of MaxP(TM) particle filters for Alcatel, Balzer, Dupont, Edwards, Leybold, Varian, Veeco, and VIC systems. The filters are specifically designed to improve the reliability, useful life, and increase the mean time between maintenance (MTBM) of the mass spectrometer helium leak detectors (MSLD) and associated vacuum pumps. Based on nearly 30 years of experience, HLT has discovered that particle contamination of the pump oil in MSLDs creates excess downtime in leak testing. These filters minimize this operational inefficiency, while minimally affecting pumping speed when the MaxP filters are installed and clean. In addition, measurement accuracies are maintained, as helium retention is practically nonexistent with clean filters. The reusable stainless steel filters are easily installed by replacing the centering ring in the inlet port.

An MSLD is comprised of a very complex analytical collector that separates the residual gases in the vacuum cavity. As an end result, the only gas that finally reaches the intended collector is helium, which is transmitted as the leak rate. With clean, ideal surroundings and clean parts, an MSLD can operate at maximum performance for many years. However, conditions are typically not ideal. Contamination is always present and often damages the integrity of the MSLD's vacuum and analytical components.
Detrimental contamination is everywhere, unless the leak detector is operated in a super cleanroom. The atmosphere introduced where the chamber is open contains fibers, dust, hair, skin scale and other debris. The parts under test may also carry these same contaminates plus particles from the manufacturing and assembly. Chips from machining slag from welding, solvents from cleaning, and particles from other processes contribute to leak detector contamination.
Vacuum pumps are different in that it is their job function to remove the contamination along with the air from the chamber and/or parts being processed. However, the useful life of the pump can be increased tremendously by minimizing unnecessary contamination as much as possible.
HLT's MaxP filters capture most of the debris, that harms both the leak detector and vacuum pump systems. These filters minimize the loss of performance from leak detectors and pumps, while extending the system life.
