LIVINGSTON, NJ --The padlock has served as the most stalwart means of deterring and preventing theft since the Middle Ages. It does, however, have a drawback; once opened and merchandise it is meant to protect is pilfered, there's no indication of the event. That's because the traditional padlock can simply be re-closed without any evidence of where, when or even whether it had been unlocked.
