Ampac Flexibles Launches Apex 3000 SF

Cincinnati, OH (October 15, 2007)-Ampac Flexibles, a unit of Ampac Packaging LLC, introduces Apex 3000 SF (Sustainable Film) series, a new line made from renewable and compostable/degradable materials. Ampac's new family of films addresses the growing trend toward selecting packaging components which assist in meeting environmental initiatives. Apex 3000 SF is made from a proprietary blend with high percentage of polylactic acid (PLA)-a renewable resource. The SF series passes the ASTM D 6400 standard which certifies it as biodegradable and compostable. Additionally, it is Food & Drug Administration compliant for food contact.

Ampac will be extruding the film in one- to multiple layers depending on the application and properties required. The structure seals to itself, thereby making it ideal for vertical form-fill-seal applications. Further, it is easier to process and has physical properties more in line with traditional flexible packaging films when compared to those made solely with PLA. "Ampac is committed to developing improved sustainable flexible packaging solutions that provide customers with packaging alternatives to meet their environmental objectives," Sal Pellingra, innovation and marketing director, Ampac Flexibles, says.

The Apex 3000 SF film line is naturally opaque. However, colorants can be added for marketing differentiation and they also can be printed via rotogravure or flexography. Ideal applications include products desiring both environmental benefits and performance. Examples include cereal bag liners, organic snack packaging, secondary packaging for biodegradable packing materials, etc.

Ampac Packaging LLC is privately held, and is owned by senior executives together with equity backing by Prudential Capital Group and Falcon Investment Advisors. It is a diversified, international, flexible packaging company with 14 manufacturing centers in North America, Europe and Asia employing approximately 1,300 people with revenues in excess of $300 million annually. In addition to products offered by Ampac Flexibles, the company is the preeminent supplier of domestic and overseas retail specialty shopping bags and security bag solutions.
