C.P. Bourg Announces Compact, Environmentally-Friendly BB3002 PUR Binder for On-Demand Book Production

  • Easily operated and maintained, the Bourg BB3002 PUR-C excels at on-demand and short-run book production while keeping VOCs in their place without venting.
  • New binder prototype is being demonstrated at drupa 2012 on the C.P. Bourg stand at Hall 13 B 69, with shipments slated for December 2012.

Drupa; Messe Dusseldorf Germany -- C.P. Bourg, today announced a compact and operator-friendly PUR version of its proven single-clamp BB3002 Perfect Binder that presents an efficient, economical and environmentally-sound means of producing bound soft-cover and hard-cover books in a wide range of sizes on-demand.

The new Bourg BB3002 PUR-C combines the innovative features of the company's successful Bourg BB3002 EVA Perfect Binder with a highly efficient and easily maintained compact polyurethane reactive (PUR) gluing system that is completely sealed and fully integrated with the BB3002 binder's operating system.

The patented nozzle and tank assembly includes an innovative gluing and cleaning /purging system. The gluing system features a self-sealing applicator nozzle that rotates open to dispense a thin bead of PUR glue or hot-melt adhesive to the milled book block, and fully closes to eliminate waste, prevent vapors from escaping, and prevent air from compromising the remaining adhesive. A compact, two-tank design with an automatic cleaning/purging cycle makes it easy for the operator to load a fresh 4.5-pound slug into the glue tank and quickly resume production, and to clean and purge the nozzle safely and automatically with pushbutton ease at start-up and shut-down.

In addition to the savings achieved by eliminating waste, the efficiency of the BB3002 PUR-C sealed spine and side gluing system reduces operator costs and production time, dramatically reduces the release of harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air, and eliminates the need for an on-board venting system.

Other features include automatic spine thickness sensing for "book of one" production, adjustable power milling and notching, high-quality knife creasing system able to create winged books and 50-job programmable memory with auto setup. The system's 11-inch color touchscreen permits easy operator control through a graphical user interface.

With minimal operator intervention from a cold start, the single-clamp BB3002 PUR-C binder can be producing books from 1 to 60 mm (0.2 to 2.56 in) thick, in page sizes from 100 x 100 mm (4.0 x 4.0 inches) to 385 x 320 mm (15.15 x 12.6 inches) at up to 200 cycles per hour.

Finished books can be stacked in an optional receiving bin for easy operator removal. Other options to the new BB3002 PUR-C include connection to a Challenge CMT 330 or CMT 130 trimmer; and addition of a fully integrated barcode solution which enables job tracking to maximize productivity and integrity and that is especially useful in "book runs of one" where matching covers to content is critical.

A prototype of the compact new Bourg BB3002 PUR-C binder is being shown here at drupa 2012 May 3-16, 2012 on the C.P. Bourg stand at Hall 13 B69. The BB3002 PIUR-C will be available directly from C.P. Bourg offices worldwide or through the company's distributors worldwide, with first shipments expected in December 2012.
