Entrust Announces Launch of Entrust Authority 8.0

PKI solution offers single platform for enterprise X.509 standard, ePassport capabilities

DALLAS, April 07, 2008 / -- Since the organization's inception, Entrust, Inc. (NASDAQ:ENTU) has been the pioneer of public key infrastructure (PKI) technology. On the cusp of the PKI 2.0 movement, the company announces the launch of the most advanced iteration of PKI to date in Entrust Authority 8.0 -- the benchmark for digital identity and information security.

"Even as the security landscape matures, public key infrastructure continues to serve as the security standard for enterprises, financial institutions and government agencies," said Entrust Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Bill Conner. "As PKI evolves to solve more and more security challenges, Entrust's integrated PKI platform not only provides the security technology behind everyday enterprise and consumer applications, it's also a vital component for global projects that aim to secure borders and protect ePassport initiatives."

A key component of a layered security approach, the latest release of Entrust Authority offers a unique, integrated platform for the widely used X.509 standard PKI digital certificates, as well as the specialized certificate types and capabilities required for new global ePassport initiatives. With these capabilities integrated in a single platform, advanced ePassport capabilities operate within a secure, proven PKI system with administration and distribution secured using the X.509 certificate architecture.

Packaged in a unique, innovative fashion, Entrust Authority combines security functions for key layers of an ePassport system: inspection station capabilities where ePassports are validated at ports of entry, as well as document verifier and country-verifying CA capabilities. Since the early stages of PKI, Entrust places special emphasis on delivering seamless automated key and certificate lifecycle management, which it is now extending to ePassport environments. These capabilities reduce system complexity, lower deployment and management costs, and reduce the threat of outages because of expired credentials in integrated ePassport environments.

The launch of Entrust Authority 8.0 also marks a key milestone for fulfilling some of the most rigorous industry standards. The Common Criteria Security Target will be expanded to encompass advanced ePassport capabilities and all administrative functions inclusive of Web-based user and policy administration functions. Also, crypto-engines now enhanced for advanced ePassport capabilities will be FIPS validated. The entire Entrust Authority 8.0 platform will then be evaluated to Common Criteria EAL4+ making it the most rigorously evaluated PKI in the market today. Entrust Authority 8.0 joins Entrust's already-released enterprise PKI client Entrust Entelligence Security Provider for the desktop, which optionally delivers automated key and certificate management functionality on Microsoft Windows- and Mac OS-based desktops, minimizing user involvement and reducing helpdesk costs.

Modular and fully integrated, the Entrust Authority PKI portfolio is built on the foundation of Entrust Authority Security Manager, the certification authority system responsible for issuing and managing users' digital identities. Optional components help organizations manage the entire lifecycle of PKI certificates.

Since its inception, Entrust has implemented PKI solutions for about 1,000 government and commercial organizations. Today, Entrust provides the technology for more than 60 governments worldwide. And, according to a recent Accenture survey, Entrust leverages PKI to help secure nine of the top-10 global e-governments.

Offering numerous minor functionality enhancements and security innovations requested by Entrust's large PKI customer base, Entrust Authority 8.0 will ship for ePassport customers in the second quarter of 2008 and in late 2008 for all other customers. Entrust Entelligence Security Provider is currently available for both Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X platforms.

PKI is in the second, more mainstream phase of its lifecycle -- more often being described as PKI 2.0. With the early promise of the technology now being realized, PKI is the foundation for real application enablement with raw technology infrastructure disappearing into a more usable, transparent and automatic security environment. PKI is now leveraged to secure everyday applications or processes such as travel, business-to-business data exchange and communication, ePassport projects, citizen authentication and more.
