M/A-COM Announces Higher Power Additions to Surmount Packageless Pin Diode Family

Improved Handling of Average Incident Power Designed for Commercial and Military Control Circuit Applications

LOWELL, Mass. - Oct. 11, 2005 - M/A-COM, a business unit of Tyco Electronics and a leading provider of wireless radio frequency (RF), microwave and millimeter wave components, today announced three additions to its existing line of packageless Surmount PIN diodes. The MA4SPS421, MA4SPS422 series devices and MA4PD-042005 series diodes provide superior power performance for future platform mobile radio and military control circuit switch and attenuator applications for the 1 MHz to 18 GHz operating range.

The compact MA4SPS42x and MA4PD-042005 series devices feature the standard "0402" (40 x 20 mils sq.) style footprint, consistent with the current family of Surmount PIN diodes, including the MA4SPS302, MA4SPS402 and MA4SPS502. The products are manufactured using a "Vertical Etch Technology," which provides lower parasitic CP and LS, while significantly improving the device heat transfer through the silicon cylinder. These superior-performing Surmount devices present circuit designers with an improved design solution over plastic packaged diodes. The MA4SPS42x, 100 um I-region series, offer high peak power (500 W, 1 uS pulse width, 0.001 duty cycle) and high average power (10 W) performance, where the 5 um I-region MA4PD-042005 series offer 50 W peak power, 1 uS pulse width, 0.001 duty cycle and up to 25 W average power performance. They function best when deployed in high signal microwave switching and attenuation control circuits.

The entire MA4SPS and MA4PD-042005 Surmount PIN diode series are manufactured using M/A-COM's proprietary HMIC silicon glass process to enable the integration of silicon PIN diodes with a low dispersion, low-loss glass medium to produce either two terminal or multi-port devices. This process produces exceptional device parametric reliability and repeatability.

These "packageless" devices provide significant electrical and mechanical performance advantages over their plastic counterparts. The "0402" style outline makes them compatible with existing surface mount manufacturing techniques and ideal for very large scale component integration.

Pricing and Availability
The MA4SPS42x and MA4PD-042005 series are available from stock and are priced at $1.60 each in quantities of 100,000. Contact M/A-COM's domestic and international sales channels for price and delivery quotes. Data sheets and supporting technical documents are available online at www.macom.com.
