Duel Systems Announces Packaging and Interconnect Solutions for the ExpressCard(TM), the New Alternative to PCMCIA
SAN JOSE, CA - Duel Systems, a subsidiary of Methode Electronics, Inc., announces the arrival of their new line of ExpressCard(TM) enclosures and connectors. The ExpressCard specification was developed as the next generation PC card by the PCMCIA Standards Organization and is a smaller and faster alternative to current PCMCIA cards. The ExpressCard is expected to soon become the new standard for portable devices used in both laptop and desktop computers. Duel and Methode will manufacture ExpressCard enclosures and connectors and provide standard and custom designs in the ExpressCard format.
The ExpressCard is available in two sizes. The ExpressCard 34 is about half the size of a standard PCMCIA card and the ExpressCard 54 is slightly smaller than a standard card. Both cards are 5mm thick and can be fitted with extended backs for use with antennas or applications where additional space is needed. Both ExpressCard sizes will fit into a universal slot with one common connector size. A guidance feature built into both slot types ensures proper insertion of the card.
Duel's ExpressCard is designed with a sturdy, easy to assemble, sonically-welded housing and an integral 26-position beam on blade connector. Both frame kit and connector conform to UL specifications.
The ExpressCard is hot pluggable with its host receptacle slots and supports both USB 2.0 and PCI Express interfaces. Applications for the new Express Card include wireless and wired communications cards, rotating and solid-state storage devices, and a variety of I/O, security, and flash memory.
Sample quantities of the ExpressCard frame kit and connectors are available now. Production volumes are expected by 1st quarter 2004. Volume pricing will be competitive with current PCMCIA products.
