PC/104-Plus Module Embeds PC Card Wireless and Networking Technology

802.11 a/b/g Wireless LAN, Bluetooth, 1394 Firewire, USB 2.0, ISDN, Ethernet, GPS, or SCSI supported by a single PC/104-Plus Module!

April 21, 2003, Arlington, Texas -WinSystems introduces its new PPM-Cardbus, a PC/104-Plus module that supports both CardBus and PCMCIA cards. It is designed for embedded applications requiring additional functions such as 802.11 (a/b/g) wireless networking, Bluetooth, IEEE-1394 Firewire, USB 2.0, SCSI, high-speed Ethernet, and other high-performance functions that have been developed for mobile computing environments. These compact and rugged add-in cards are available from many sources worldwide at low cost.

The PPM-Cardbus module is based upon the Texas Instruments (Dallas, TX) TI1510 PCI-to-CardBus controller. The controller is wired to the PC/104-Plus bus which is the PCI bus. It supports 32-bit PC Cards operating at bus speeds up to 33 MHz yet retains compatibility with the 16-bit PC cards as well. It also supports break-before-make switching so that a card can be inserted into the PPM-Cardbus module while system power is on. The CardBus hot-insertion and PnP capabilities allow a CardBus card-resident device to be treated as a normal PCI device for purposes of configuration and usage, with the added benefit that CardBus devices can be added to or removed from the system at will.

WinSystems' PPM-Cardbus allows a CardBus module to be plugged into its 68-pin mating connector. This connector has long card guides on each side to provide secure mounting. Cards fit in between the PC/104 and PC/104-Plus connector for easy insertion and removal. They are keyed to prevent them from being installed upside down.

The PPM-Cardbus is a +5volt only board. It contains an onboard 3.3-volt linear regulator capable of supplying up to 1 Amp to the card socket. It automatically detects and switches the correct voltage to the socket. Overcurrent sensing is provided for each output voltage separately.
