August 9, 2005 - DigiVU OVD is applied to metallic substrates and is activated by laser source to form hologram-type image, enabling manufacturers to communicate brand identity and keep it secure from counterfeiters. Chemistry can also be added to Masterbatch in polymer coating over metal, guaranteeing absolute image permanence and resistance to abrasion. Once substrate is treated with DigiVU, image does not have to be activated until end of production process for extra security.

Sherwood Technology Introduces DigiVU OVD for Overt Protection of Brands

(WIDNES, CHESHIRE - August 5th 2005) - Sherwood Technology Ltd. announces the launch of its latest application from its DigiVU range of products, DigiVU OVD - an overt security feature for protecting brands. The ground breaking DigiVU chemistry is applied to metallic substrates and is activated by a laser source to form a hologram-type image. DigiVU OVD enables manufacturers to communicate their brand identity cost-effectively and quickly, and keep it secure from counterfeiters. DigiVU is a colour change solution which provides sophisticated, high level features for the protection of documents, products, and brands.

Brand recognition is becoming more and more important in today's industry. With tools that protect brands gaining in value, DigiVU OVD provides a safe and highly effective way of protecting brands against counterfeiting as well as introducing a new approach to brand recognition.

DigiVU OVD uses a combination of proprietary chemistry, a variable tuneable laser source and an individual control system to form a series of overt features on or within a product. High resolution images are produced by a variable digital imaging process which is only achievable using the unique DigiVU chemistry. The chemistry is either applied to the surface of the metallic substrate or can be added as a Masterbatch in a polymer coating over the metal, and is then activated by the laser. This results in an image which reflects light differently depending on the angle of the incident light - slipping between a positive and negative image.

With Polymer coated metals absolute image permanence and resistance to abrasion are guaranteed and therefore hold a distinct advantage over more traditional surface printing methods for brand protection/identification purposes. Once the metallic substrate is treated with DigiVU the image does not have to be activated until the very end of the production process, providing an extra layer of security not available with traditional holograms.

In addition to the ability to embed DigiVU in the substrate of a product or on the product's surface, by using DigiVU OVD it is now possible to apply the image through any laminate packaging surrounding the product. The laser passes through the laminate without interfering with the material and activates the underlying chemistry to produce the image. This enables manufacturers to brand the product at the very end of the product line.

Andrew Jackson, Applications Marketing Manager of Sherwood, comments: "Brand protection is becoming increasingly important within the manufacturing industry and with DigiVU technology we are helping companies to cost-effectively protect their brands."
