Solberg's Oil Mist Eliminator Prevents Turbine System Seal Leakage

Seal leakage caused by pressure in the crankcase is a common problem with gas turbine installations. Excess pressure damages seals and causes leakage, which is not only an environmental issue, but a cost issue as the oil is wasted and lost. Solberg's Vacuum Assisted Oil Mist Eliminators (VAE) prevent oil leaks through the drive shaft seals in crankcases and oil reservoirs along the drive train of large gas and steam turbines, compressors, turbo compressors and reciprocating engines.

Solberg's oil mist eliminator consists of a vacuum-rated housing; a blower system that is used to create the required vacuum level; and a high-efficiency coalescing filter element. The vacuum is created by a regenerative blower or a centrifugal fan. The systems are designed for each application.

The mist eliminator runs continuously to provide three machinery support functions. The main function is to create and maintain a vacuum in the crankcase reservoir to eliminate oil leakage through the driveshaft seals. The secondary functions include capturing and coalescing oil mist from the air stream then using a drain line to return the captured oil back to the reservoir. The result is discharged air that is oil-free an environmentally friendly.

"Seal leakage and oil mist are two important issues that are common in power generation applications, but they are frequently an afterthought by turbine operators or by the OEMs" said Ray Kulpa, a national accounts manager for Solberg. "These issues may not be addressed at all because much of the market is unaware that there are a variety of solutions available, especially with regard to current environmental standards. It is a need for the marketplace.

Solberg's oil mist eliminator consists of a filter housing, a coalescing element, a vacuum source and a drain mechanism. A method for controlling the vacuum level is also designed with the system. The vacuum control method can vary from a manual bleed filter and valve to a completely automatic, variable frequency drive with controls vacuum level based on the back pressure of the system.
