February 24, 2009 - Available in both surface mount technology and through-hole styles, non-contact capacitive switches detect changes in capacitance from proximity. Infrared version reduces influence of ambient light via internal compensating circuit, providing less false switching. They can be encased in plastic or glass, and sealed to IP68 for waterproofing. Without need to turn electromechanical contacts, units last minimum of 10 to 6th power cycles, as there is not any wear on components.

Elma Announces 'No Touch' Infrared and Capacitive Switches

Fremont, CA , -- January 20, 2009

Elma Electronic, a leading designer and manufacturer of rotary components and electronic packaging products, now offers non-contact switches that are triggered by sensors. This design provides several benefits for medical, automotive, industrial, communications, and mil/aero applications.

The non-contact switches open many design possibilities and advantages. They can be encased in plastic or glass, which provides easy cleaning of the end-device without risking damaging the switch. The switches can also be sealed to IP68 for waterproofing. Without the need to turn electromechanical contacts, there is not any wear on the switches' components, so they can last a minimum of 10 to the 6th power cycles.

The capacitive switches detect from proximity any changes in capacitance. The infrared version reduces the influence of ambient light via an internal compensating circuit, providing less false switching. The switches can use combinations of proximity and length of time combinations to perform different funtions. For example, holding the hand right next to the switch for a couple of seconds can activate a "push button" mode. Holding the hand farther away and waving it quickly in front of the switch can activate a different function. Optional LEDs show the change-of-state when activated. The switches come in both SMT (surface mount technology) and through-hole styles. Miniature and low-power-consumption types are also available.

The lead-time is 4 weeks ARO.
