February 1, 2006 - Designed for Geiger or Linear Mode single-photon counting at wavelengths from 0.9-1.6 microns, SU055-GM-APD-FO consists of one indium gallium arsenide/indium phosphide, near-infrared (NIR), avalanche photodiode (APD). It incorporates APD chip, thermoelectric cooler, thermistor, and optical fiber coupling optics into hermetic package. Along with quantum efficiency of over 70%, unit offers low-noise analog optical detection up to approximately 1 GHz.

Goodrich Introduces Near-Infrared Avalanche Photodiode for Geiger or Linear Mode Single-Photon Counting


PRINCETON, NJ, January 13, 2006 -Goodrich Corporation (www.oss.goodrich.com) announces a unique indium gallium arsenide/indium phosphide (InGaAs/ InP) near-infrared avalanche photodiode (APD) designed for single-photon counting at wavelengths of 0.9 to 1.6 microns. The new SU055-GM-APD-FO offers an extremely low dark current with high responsivity, making it ideal for Geiger Mode single-photon counting. It is also capable of high-gain linear mode single-photon counting with a quantum efficiency greater than 70 percent.

Featuring ultra low-noise analog optical detection up to approximately 1GHz, Goodrich's new device incorporates a high-performance APD chip, a thermoelectric cooler, a thermistor and optical fiber coupling optics into a compact and robust, hermetic package. The standard module comes with 1 meter of 50-micron core, multi-mode fiber with an FC connector for easy integration. Optional single-mode fiber pigtail is also available.

Other applications for the new near-infrared APD include quantum cryptography, optical time domain reflectometry, near-infrared Raman spectroscopy, biomedical NIR spectroscopy, time-resolved emission detection for failure analysis and singlet oxygen detection. The high dynamic range device is manufactured by a business unit of Goodrich's Optical and Space Systems division based in Princeton, N.J. (formerly Sensors Unlimited, Inc.).
