STMicroelectronics' Nomadik Mobile Multimedia Processors and Board Support Package Earn Microsoft's Windows CE 5.0 Certification

ST's Nomadik mobile multiprocessors more accessible to a wide range of multimedia applications

Geneva, May 5, 2005 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM) today announced that its Nomadik family of mobile multimedia application processors and associated board support package (BSP) have been certified by Microsoft Corp. to work with Windows CE 5.0. ST's Nomadik family of processors are optimized to take full advantage of the powerful and flexible Windows CE 5.0 operating system by featuring ultra-low power consumption, high performance, low cost, easy application development, and scalability. The related BSP includes a boot loader, configuration files, and device drivers for using a Nomadik processor on a standard development board.

Certification of the Nomadik processor family and its BSP by Microsoft carries the benefit of assuring that the processors and the BSP meet the Windows CE 5.0 operating system requirements and therefore will be more readily accepted by customers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Inclusion in this elite group of processors makes Nomadik a marketable quality assurance point and provides positive industry exposure.

The combined benefits of a Nomadik platform running Windows CE 5.0 make the pair an appealing platform on which to build a wide range of mobile multimedia consumer products. Among those are smart phones and other mobile devices that play music, take pictures, record video, and host two-way video communications, as well as automotive devices that inform, navigate, and entertain.

"Microsoft is pleased to certify STMicroelectronics' Nomadik mobile multimedia processors and board support package running Windows CE 5.0," said Jonas Hasselberg, group product manager, Microsoft Corp.'s Mobile and Embedded Devices Division. "Among the many benefits of the combined offerings is the help this brings OEMs to drive innovative products to market quickly."

"We fully expect our Nomadik processors running Windows CE 5.0 to open a world of mobile multimedia applications beyond the obvious," said Patrice Meilland, Director of Marketing for Application Processor and Portable Platforms Division, STMicroelectronics. "With this combination, portable multimedia products like smart phones, cameras, media players, video recorders, and videoconferencing equipment will be easier than ever to design and bring to market. In addition, automotive designers now have an unbeatable solution with which to add multimedia features that enhance the driving experience."

The Nomadik family of application processors comprises the original award winning STn88001 and three recent additions, the STn8810, STn8811, and STn8812. The STn8811 builds on the STn8800 with improved video and audio performance, advanced power management features, and a comprehensive security framework to protect sensitive data. The STn8811 and STn8812 add 256 and 512 Mbits of SDRAM, respectively, as well as 512 Mbits of NAND flash memory without increasing the chip footprint, thanks to advanced chip-stacking package technology.
