Schmitt Showcases Latest Balancing, Vibration and Measurement Technology at Industrie Lyon

Schmitt Europe’s latest range of balancing, vibration control and laser measurement solutions will be showcased by the company’s principal agent in France, Techmo SAS, on Stand 150 in Hall 4U at the forthcoming Industrie Lyon 2005 exhibition, which takes place between 8th-11th March.

Schmitt’s recently-enhanced SBS system brings the balancing of grinding machines to new levels of accuracy and convenience, by achieving results to within 0.02 microns (peak to peak) at speeds from 300 to 30,000 rev/min. Comprising a computer control, sensor, spindle mounting adapter and balancing head, the system has been designed as an inexpensive, permanent attachment for grinding machines with wheels from 150 to 1220 mm diameter.

The fully automatic system not only eliminates time-consuming manual balancing operations, but also provides improved component finish and dimensional accuracy, minimised surface burning and a dramatic reduction in wheel dressing frequency. In addition, the SBS system achieves a rapid payback on investment through improved wheel life and increased productivity - combined with substantial savings in machine downtime and maintenance.

Complementing this externally mounted grinding wheel balancing system is the company’s range of internal, ring, semi-automatic and portable grinding wheel balancers, which will also be on show at Industrie Lyon 2005.

Another core product to be highlighted at the show will be Schmitt’s Acoustic Emission Monitoring System (AEMS), an advanced process control tool capable of delivering 20 per cent productivity increases on most high speed grinding operations.

Consisting of an acoustic sensor and slot-in PCB card for the company’s versatile SB-4500 control unit, the AEMS system provides an exceptionally fast response over a wide frequency band, enabling it to be used to eliminate gap time in CNC machining cycles, as well as to monitor the condition of cutting tools or optimise grinding wheel dressing operations.

The system also reports contact between components and rapidly in-fed tools (crash conditions) within one millisecond - signalling the machine controller to immediately halt movement before damage can been caused.

Further Schmitt’s products to be demonstrated at Industrie Lyon include the company’s extensive range of high precision distance measurement equipment, laser displacement sensors and alignment systems, along with surface roughness and scatter measurement devices.

“Industrie Lyon 2005 Exhibition is one of the most important events on the calendar for French engineering companies,” comments Schmitt’s Managing Director, Dean White. “It therefore represents an ideal showcase for our latest balancing, vibration control and laser measurement equipment; by enabling us to demonstrate how accuracy and precision can be used to maximise manufacturing productivity.”
