April 6, 2004 - Portable, ac mains-powered, KF-LAB Test Set detects moisture content of insulating oils, primarily within oil-filled transformers and switchgear. Default setting mode is arranged to give correct settings to test moisture content of insulating oils with specific gravity of 0.875. Unit also analyzes other substances with specific gravities between 0.6–1.4. Detection of moisture content helps prevent spontaneous combustion and deterioration of products.

Megger Offers Three Products for Detecting Moisture in Insulating Oils

Designed to detect the moisture content of insulating oils, primarily within oil-filled transformers and switchgear, Megger now offers even more user choice and flexibility through the addition of the recently launched mains-powered KF-LAB oil test set to the Karl Fischer product range. Complementing the existing Karl Fischer products, the KF-LAB joins the fully portable KF875 and KF-UNI oil test sets and gives the user the ability to choose from a product range that accommodates numerous oil test applications.

The cost-effective and AC mains-powered KF-LAB saves on the costs associated with a battery supply, and is ideal for oil test laboratories. Both the fully portable KF-875 and KF-UNI instruments can be used on-site or in the laboratory. The KF-875 is one button operation for measuring insulating oils with a specific gravity of 0.875 and, for more flexibility than provided by the KF-875, the KF-UNI analyzes other substances with specific gravities between 0.6 and 1.4. The KF-LAB offers the same capabilities as the KF-UNI and also has a default setting mode arranged to give the correct settings to test the moisture content of insulating oils with a specific gravity of 0.875.

All three instruments use Karl Fischer coulometric titrimetry, the recognized industry standard method for determining moisture content, and the standard against which other instruments are calibrated. This method is sensitive to water in whatever volumes and has a very wide measurement range. Moisture in insulating oil reduces the efficiency of oil as an insulator and may also be a sign of degradation in the solid insulation in transformer and switchgear equipment since water is a by-product of the breakdown of this type of insulation.

The Karl Fischer oil test set range is designed to accommodate the needs of electrical maintenance engineers who maintain oil-filled transformers and switchgear within substations across the world. In other industries, detection of moisture content is important to prevent spontaneous combustion, deterioration of products and to ensure the efficacy of pharmaceuticals.

Megger is one of the world's leading manufacturers and suppliers of electrical and telecom test and measurement equipment. With research, engineering and manufacturing facilities in the USA and UK, combined with sales and technical support in most countries, Megger is uniquely placed to meet the needs of its customers worldwide.
