Ticona Extrudable Hostaform® POM XT20(TM) Sets New Benchmark for Cold Impact Resistance, Weld-Line Strength

Florence, Ky., Sulzbach, Germany, Shanghai, PR China, - Ticona Engineering Polymers has extended its Hostaform® S family of impact-resistant modified acetal copolymers (POM) to include Hostaform XT20(TM) - an extrudable grade for technical pipes and hoses that sets a new benchmark for cold impact resistance and weld-line strength.

Hostaform XT20 opens opportunities for completely new areas of applications. For example, Novoplast Schlauchtechnik GmbH of Halberstadt, Germany, is extruding Hostaform XT20 pipes and hoses with burst strength and impact toughness that meets most of the requirements set for technical pipe applications. They are used as protective sleeves for hand brake cables and elastic shafts for seat adjusters or sun roofs.

"The burst pressure and low temperature impact resistance of these pipes and hoses simply set a new scale. Their fusion behavior has been improved by the modification process and allows us to employ standard components in the peripheral units along the extrusion line," said Fred Liebzeit, technical director. Novoplast.

Hostaform XT20 is an enhanced design of Hostaform S 9362, 9363 and 9364, the latest generation of Hostaform S products from Ticona marked by their advanced impact toughness, weld-line strength and fuel resistance. This family of POM materials with enhanced characteristics is designed for use in applications previously molded with impact-resistant modified polyamides (PA) 11 and 12. In addition to comparable property characteristics to PA 11 and 12, next generation Hostaform POM provides greater low-temperature impact strength and improved chemical resistance.

Next generation Hostaform POM is a material of choice for many applications, specifically in the automotive industry. With excellent chemical resistance, mechanical properties and thermal stability, it provides:

o Service temperatures between -40 degrees Celsius and 80 degrees Celsius

o Low water absorption

o Excellent mechanical and tribological properties

o High-level chemical resistance, particularly against fuel

Now, with the introduction of Hostaform XT20, Ticona opportunities for use in a variety of new applications such as technical pipes and hoses for fuel lines, pneumatic braking systems, clutches, air-conditioning and power steering.
