AVX'S Proprietary X7s Dielectric Enables the First 1206 Size 100V MLCC with 4.7µf Capacitance & 125°C Max Temp

Press release date: July 3, 2013

Designed for use in industrial power supply circuits, the new 1206, 100V MLCCs exhibit high voltage resistance, high capacitance, low ESR, ripple resistance, & an extended lifetime

GREENVILLE, S.C. – AVX Corporation, a leading manufacturer of advanced passive components and interconnect solutions, has introduced the first 1206 size, 100V MLCC capable of exhibiting capacitance of 4.7µF and withstanding operating temperatures of up to 125°C.  Designed for use in industrial power supply circuits, the new 1206, 100V MLCCs exhibit high voltage resistance, high capacitance, low ESR, ripple resistance, and an extended lifetime.  Employing AVX’s newly developed X7S dielectric material, which reduces the average diameter of dielectric particles by approximately 20% and enhances the uniformity of its composition, the new MLCC also features a 30% smaller mounting surface than conventional 1210 size products, providing improved design flexibility over comparable products, such as aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

“Reducing the size of capacitors while maintaining high voltage resistance and high capacitance is difficult because properties such as dielectric constants and insulation resistance degrade when applying high voltage to dielectric materials,” said Kazushige Takamori, marketing manager at AVX.  “However, by utilizing AVX’s proprietary new X7S dielectric material, we were able to both reduce the size of the capacitor and maintain performance specs ideal for use in small industrial equipment products with long service lives.”

In addition to providing high voltage resistance, high capacitance, low ESR, and a long useful lifespan in a miniature 1206 (3.2mm x 1.6mm x 1.6mm) package, AVX’s new 100V MLCC also exhibits considerable ripple-resistance in frequency bands extending to more than several dozen KHz.  Consequently, unlike aluminum electrolytic capacitors, the new 1206 MLCC can limit heat generation and voltage fluctuations in power supply circuits, contributing to both the reduced size and enhanced reliability of industrial equipment.
