FDK Introduces 3A, 4A, and 6A High Density Mini POL Converters
Up to 39W of output power with no derating
San Jose, CA and Tokyo, Japan - April 8, 2009 - FDK Corporation (Tokyo Stock Exchange 1st Section: Code 6955), a global electronic component and battery manufacturer, introduces five new products to its DK Series of non-isolated point of load (POL) dc-dc converters. These very small, low profile converters deliver up to 6 Amperes (A) of output current at power densities up to 860Watts/cubic inch in an SMD package and up to 4A of output current at power densities up to 760 Watts/cubic inch in a SIP package. They have efficiencies up to 93% and provide a complete power conversion solution, without the need for external input and output capacitors. Under natural convection, these new DK Series converters deliver the full rated output current with no derating in ambient temperatures up to 85 degrees Celsius in the SMD package, and up to 70 degrees Celsius in the SIP package.
Occupying a SMD footprint of less than 0.3 in2 (2cm2) and a SIP footprint of less than 0.1 in2 (0.6cm2), the new converters provide considerable space savings over discrete on-board solutions. Their low height of 0.134 in (3.4mm) in the SMD package and 0.473" (12.0mm) in the SIP package makes them particularly suitable for high density racks, blade systems, and low profile consumer applications. The DK Series converters are targeted toward telecommunications, data communications, computing, and industrial applications where board space, cost, height, efficiency, and reliable operation in elevated temperature environments are critical.
The new products consist of the FPDK12SR8003PSV (SMD 3A), FPDK12SR8004PSV (SMD 4A), FPDK12SR8006PSV (SMD 6A), FPDK12TR8003PSV (SIP 3A), and FPDK12TR8004PSV (SIP 4A). The 3A and 4A SMD packages measure 0.657 x 0.402 x 0.134 in. (16.7 x 10.2 x 3.4mm), the 6A measures 0.657 x 0.402 x 0.173 in. (16.7 x 10.2 x 4.4mm), and the SIP packages measure 0.472 x 0.394 x 0.185 in. (12.0 x 10.0 x 4.7mm). These converters operate from a 5.6Vdc to 14.0Vdc input and provide a tightly regulated programmable output voltage in the range of 0.8Vdc to 6.6Vdc. They are true single input converters in that they do not require an external Vcc (bias) supply for operation. All models feature programmable output voltage, remote ON/OFF, over-current and over-temperature protection, and start up into a pre-biased output. The SMD models additionally offer a power good signal.
