Cygnal Introduces USB Microcontroller Requiring No External Crystal

February 3, 2003 - AUSTIN, TX - Cygnal Integrated Products, Inc. today announced the C8051F321, a mixed-signal flash microcontroller with an integrated full-speed USB 2.0 function controller. The C8051F321 requires no external components, not even resistors or a crystal, and is available in the tiny 5mm x 5mm 28-pin Micro Lead-Frame Package (MLP), making it the world's smallest USB microcontroller solution available.

"The C8051F321 combines a comprehensive set of analog peripherals, Flash memory, and a USB function controller with Cygnal's high-speed 8051 CPU," said Danny Allred, Director of Product Marketing for Cygnal. "The integrated PHY and clock-recovery circuit eliminate the need for any external components, such as resistors or a crystal, making the C8051F321 ideal for small form-factor USB applications."

The C8051F321 has a high throughput 24MIPS 8051 CPU, 16Kbytes of Flash memory, 2304 bytes of RAM, and 21 I/O pins. On-chip peripherals include a 1.5% internal oscillator with clock-recovery for USB, a 10-bit 200KSPS ADC, temperature sensor, UART, SMBus®, and SPI® bus. Prices start at $4.64 in 10,000 piece quantities.

The C8051F321 has on-chip debug circuitry facilitating full-speed in-system debug features such as single-stepping, breakpoints, and modifying registers and memory. The C8051F320DK Development kit sells for $229 with features typical of in-circuit emulators costing a thousand dollars or more. Both development kits and chips are available for purchase direct from Cygnal at cygnal.com.
