Huntsman Advanced Materials' Adhesive Designed for Antenna Assembly

LOS ANGELES, August 23, 2004 - A fast-curing, high-strength methacrylate adhesive is now available from Huntsman Advanced Materials for rapid bonding of metals and plastics used in mobile VHF and UHF telecommunications antennas as well as digital radio frequency antennas that are part of electronic article surveillance systems.

Huntsman's toughened XD 4662-A/B methacrylate adhesive is an easy-to-handle, gap-filling, light yellow liquid with a mixed viscosity of 60,000 cP at room temperature and a convenient 1:1 pbv mix ratio. To facilitate use on multi-piece, automated production projects, the adhesive is supplied in five-gallon pails.

XD 4662-A/B methacrylate adhesive is formulated to attain handling strength after 18 minutes and full cure after 30 minutes at 77°F (25°C). At 140°F (60°C), the methacrylate system can be handled after nine minutes and cures fully in 12 minutes. Cured XD 4662-A/B adhesive produces long-lasting bonds with a room-temperature lap shear strength of 3,050 psi on aluminum. Strength is maintained at 3,050 psi after heat aging (60 days at 158°F/70°C). After immersion for 90 days in gasoline, aluminum/aluminum lap shear strength is 2,900 psi. After 90 days immersion in 10% acetic acid, lap shear strength of aluminum substrates is 3,150 psi. XD 4662-A/B methacrylate adhesive has an elongation of 50-75 percent and a roller peel of 23 pli.
