NISC MDMS is 'Ready For Prime Time'

LAKE SAINT LOUIS, Mo., -- National Information Solutions Cooperative (NISC) has released its Meter Data Management System (MDMS) v.1.4 for utility use. The service is an affordable solution for utilities, large and small, that need an accurate and efficient way to convert Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) data into useful operational, billing and consumer information.

According to David Bonnett, NISC Vice President - Utility Solutions, interest in NISC's MDMS from utilities has been brisk. "Over the past year, as the number of utilities deploying AMI systems has increased, so too has the demand for a reliable, scalable and affordable meter data service," he said. "We have finished development on the system's basic features and have pilot tested it for more than a year. NISC MDMS is solid and ready for prime time. It's with confidence that we are starting commercial deployment at several locations around the nation."

The NISC MDMS base offering provides utilities the following features:

-- data hosting on proven, secure, scalable servers,

-- data "cleansing" through industry standard VEE (verification, estimation and editing)

-- ability to process data from the most widely-used smart metering systems (AMI),

-- a full integration with NISC's iVUE, as well as other customer billing systems,

-- user-friendly consumer and CSR presentment tool for analyzing the usage data

-- support for time-based rate structures using interval data,

-- an interface with Google's PowerMeter,

-- integrated weather degree data for comparison, and

-- individual alert and filtering capabilities.

At Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative (MVEC), Jordan, Minn., site of the pilot test, NISC's MDMS has become a star performer. "NISC's MDMS is meeting our business needs today, and positions us to accomplish our objectives in the future," said Ryan Hentges, the co-op's Vice President of Corporate Services. MVEC is using NISC MDMS across its entire system of 41,000 meters, with 38,000 currently served by MDMS. According to Dan Wilbanks, NISC's Chief Operating Officer, "When NISC MDMS is fully deployed at MVEC, we will process and store more than 900,000 readings a day for the co-op."

Both Wilbanks and Bonnett agree that NISC MDMS's most important feature is validation, estimation and editing - VEE. "The accuracy of data a smart meter delivers can often fall below 100%. Accurate information is critical to utilities, and helping them educate their consumers," Bonnett said. "We 'cleanse' all meter data using VEE to bring its accuracy up to 100 percent."
