Taylor Hobson Introduces Talyrond 295

HIGH-PRECISION ROUNDNESS/CYLINDRICITY MEASUREMENT SYSTEM

Offers Fully Automatic Sub-Micron Analysis of Form and Geometry

LEICESTER, ENGLAND-Ultra high-precision roundness measurement of sub-micron components requires spindle accuracies down to the nanometer level, and the newly introduced Talyrond 295 with diamond-turned, air-bearing spindle from Taylor Hobson Precision is unsurpassed in radial and axial accuracy. Contributing to the Talyrond's performance is its fully automatic operation, which speeds the inspection process and eliminates operator intervention errors.

Taylor Hobson is able to support its claim of nano-metric roundness accuracy for the Talyrond 295 by including an ultra high-precision glass hemisphere with every system that has a roundness deviation less than or equal to 10nm and individual slope values of less than 2 nm/7.2o. This unique calibration artifact is used to monitor and verify that spindle performance on the Talyrond 295 is within specification. Verifiable spindle accuracy assures complete confidence in measurement results.

Straightness and positioning accuracies have also been enhanced on the Talyrond 295, propelling it toward benchmark status. All components of the automatic center and level mechanism are manufactured to a high order of accuracy using materials that optimize resolution and repeatability. The spindle rotates continuously during the centering and leveling process, which not only saves time but more importantly provides the stability necessary to achieve target eccentricities better than 0.2µm.

The Talyrond 295 includes the all-new Talymin 5 gauge head, which offers resolution to 1.2 nm making it ideal for ultra high-precision components. Easily interchangeable probe arms are available for all applications, including small inside diameters and stepped surfaces. The mechanical integrity of its crutch and pivot mechanism eliminates drift during the measurement cycle and assures stability of contact between the gauge and component.

To isolate measurements from floor-borne vibration and environmental influences, the Talyrond 295 includes an integrated enclosure and dynamic anti-vibration mounts located between its support frame and cast iron base. The spindle, vertical column and horizontal arm are all anchored to the one-piece cast iron base. No other material provides as high a level of stiffness and stability for measuring moving loads. That stability along with 0.2µm vertical axis straightness and 0.1µm positioning resolution make the instrument ideal for high-accuracy applications such as automotive fuel injectors and hard disk drive bearings.

Taylor Hobson Precision is a leading manufacturer of ultra-precision measurement instrumentation for a variety of markets, including optics, semiconductors, hard disk drives and nanotechnology research. It is a unit of AMETEK, Inc, a leading global manufacturer of electronic instruments and electric motors, with annual sales of more than $1.5 billion.
