Schneider Electric Introduces New Managed Ethernet Switches Designed for the Toughest Industrial Environments

PALATINE, Ill. - NOVEMBER 3, 2005 - Three new Telemecanique® ConneXium(TM) managed Ethernet switches from Schneider Electric combine powerful new features that make it easier and more affordable for plant floor and IT professionals to monitor their factory floor Ethernet networks, access information and troubleshoot network problems.

The new ConneXium switches incorporate extensive web-based diagnostic and configuration management tools as well as high-availability redundancy, increased traffic optimization, better filtering options and enhanced security features. Unauthorized access is limited through new SNMP V3 security features, such as limiting password transmission, providing complex calculations of keys, and encrypted SNMP packets for improved security and reliability.

Multi-mode fiber versions are designed to provide long distance capacity where the distance between nodes is more than 100 meters, and can achieve distances of two kilometers. The single-mode fiber versions can extend up to 15 kilometers. These Ethernet 10/100 base copper and fiber port switches meet IEEE 802.3 or 802.3u standards. The TP copper ports support half/full duplex and 10/100 Mbps auto-negotiation, auto-polarity and auto-crossing, while the fiber optic ports support full duplex. The switches are easy to mount on a standard DIN rail.

Other key features of the new ConneXium switches include:

Port mirroring - data traffic related to the source port is copied to another destination port and the management tool connected to that port monitors and analyzes traffic.

Rapid Scanning Tree (RST) - in time-critical applications, RST provides a sub-second reconfiguration time in the case of a path break.

Priority optimization - after VLAN tag prioritization, high priority data is prevented from interference by lower priority data in heavy data traffic load periods.

Flow control - a mechanism that acts as an overload protection by holding off additional traffic during heavy periods.

Broadcast filtering - guarantees reliable data exchange during high broadcast traffic, limiting the number of broadcasts that can be sent out of a port within a second.

Multi-address capability - the switches learn switching parameters for up to a maximum of 4,000 MAC addresses and delete inactive address entries to optimize network traffic.

DHCP option 82 configuration - provides automatic IP address allocation to end devices on a per port basis with a DHCP relay agent.

Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) - synchronizes system time on the network for both SNTP server and client functions.

Auto-MDI/MDI-X - the copper ports support auto switching of transmit and receive wire pairs to establish communications with an end device, transparently interconnecting infrastructure or end devices with either straight-through or cross-over cables.

Dual-input power supply - two de-coupled inputs supply power independently.

Alarm relay - the alarm contact supervises the functions of the Ethernet switch and facilitates remote diagnostics without requiring management software.

The durable switches meet all agency certifications and approvals, including UL508, UL1604 Class 1 Div 2, UL 60950, CSAQ C22.2 14 (cUL mark), CSA C22.2 213 Class 1 Div 2 (cUL mark), CSA No. 60950, CE and IEC 61131-1.

The ConneXium family of Ethernet industrial hubs, switches, bridges and transceivers enable a complete Ethernet solution that supports a high level of resilience. Their scalable redundant features - from single to double ring structures - make it easy to build fault-tolerant networks that fit specific environments.
