March 11, 2011 - MEMS Split, Select, and Drop delivers colorless and directionless capabilities to ROADM networks. It simultaneously broadcasts multi-wavelength input signals through array of MEMS 1xN Switches, which offer switching time of less than 20 ms, and MEMS Tunable Filters. These feature ±50 pm wavelength setting accuracy within C or L Bands and tuning speed of less than 30 ms. Available with 4 channels, splitter can be scaled to any number of channels and suits metro and regional optical networks.

DiCon Fiberoptics' New MEMS Split, Select, and Drop Delivers Colorless and Directionless Capabilities to ROADM Networks

Richmond, CA - DiCon Fiberoptics' new MEMS Split, Select, and Drop delivers both colorless and directionless capabilities to ROADM networks. Optical splitters simultaneously broadcast multi-wavelength input signals through an array of DiCon's well-recognized MEMS 1xN Switches and MEMS Tunable Filters. As each switch selects from all the signals, any signal can be routed to one or more filters. Each filter then extracts a wavelength to be sent to an output port. The Split, Select, and Drop arrives as part of DiCon's inauguration of a new colorless/directionless ROADM product family aimed at optimizing metro and regional optical networks.

The Split, Select, and Drop's unique design enables network architects to readily apply colorless and directionless routing to their systems. The array structure reduces size and exploits electronics sharing for more versatility and less power consumption. While the stock model comes in four channels, the Split, Select, and Drop may be scaled to any number of channels to suit a particular architecture. The Split, Select, and Drop's use of DiCon MEMS 1xN Switches and MEMS Tunable Filters ensures its superior optical performance and reliability.

DiCon's MEMS technology, which has been continuously developed for over 15 years, is the key to the Split, Select, and Drop's colorless and directionless capabilities. The 1XN Switches exhibit a switching time of less than 20 ms. The Tunable Filters feature a Gaussian-shaped pass-band optimized for 50 or 100 GHz channel spacing, a +/- 50pm wavelength setting accuracy within the C or L Bands, and a tuning speed of less than 30ms. Manufactured under DiCon's proprietary specifications, the switches and filters demonstrate excellent durability, thermal stability, and repeatability.

"Today's networks need to be flexible to meet increasingly dynamic traffic patterns," explained Robert Schleicher, the Vice-President of Product Development. "Our MEMS Split, Select, and Drop delivers both colorless and directionless capabilities, giving network architects greater freedom in designing their systems."
