August 25, 2008 - Offering Ethernet Private Line and Virtual Private Line functionality, Model VSC7350 media access controller (MAC) allows OEMs to support advanced Metro Ethernet services over both SONET/SDH and DWDM applications. It supports conversion from XAUI to SPI4.2 by transferring packets between each XAUI interface and up to 48 SPI4.2 channels. This enables single multi-service provisioning platform development for connectivity between Ethernet over SONET mappers, network processors, and ASICs.

Vitesse Provides Superior Migration Path to Advanced Metro Ethernet Services

Industry-First Carrier-class MAC delivers Ethernet Virtual Private Line functionality for SONET/SDH and DWDM Applications

LAS VEGAS - NXTComm 2008 - June 17, 2008 - With the increased demand for data based services, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) must upgrade communications infrastructure systems to deploy enhanced Ethernet services over SONET/SDH-based technology in order to effectively and reliably deliver voice, video and data-based traffic. To meet these critical network requirements, Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (Pink Sheets: VTSS) has introduced the VSC7350, the industry's first media access controller (MAC) which allows OEMs to support advanced Metro Ethernet services over both SONET/SDH and DWDM applications. The VSC7350 is the fourth-generation MAC in Vitesse's widely adopted product porftolio and the first to deliver both Ethernet Private Line and Virtual Private Line functionality.

The VSC7350 is an advanced Ethernet aggregation device containing two 10 Gbps XAUI ports plus a SPI4.2 host interface. It supports the conversion from XAUI to SPI4.2 by transferring packets between each XAUI interface and up to 48 SPI4.2 channels. This enables single Multi-Service provisioning Platform (MSPP) development for seamless connectivity between Ethernet over SONET mappers, network processors, ASICs and Carrier Ethernet devices. The addition of VLAN-based aggregation in the MAC allows existing platforms to deliver all variations of EPL, EVPL, and E-LAN Metro Ethernet services over existing SONET/SDH networks.

"Vitesse is extending its leadership in Ethernet over SONET/SDH solutions that enable carrier-class Ethernet services. This new generation of MAC is the only merchant silicon available today that offers OEMs the functionality needed to deliver against the network requirements of advanced Metro Ethernet services,"said Andy Ebert, product marketing manager for Vitesse. "With the pervasiveness of SONET/SDH in telecom networks, having a migration path that easily and cost-effectively upgrades these networks is necessary as the industry moves to the ubiquitous adoption of advanced Ethernet services. The VSC7350 is an essential component in enabling this adoption."

The VSC7350 MAC supports an enhanced mode to the standard XAUI interface which combines SPI-like channelization and finer flow control granularity with lower number of pins and longer trace support than the traditional XAUI interface. Using VLAN based channelization, per channel shaping and an in-band or out-of-band flow control option, the user can support EVPL and E-LAN functionality on 48 different users each of which can meet individual carrier Service Level Agreements (SLA).

Availability and Pricing

Samples of the VSC7350 MAC are available now. To reduce development costs and improve time-to-market for OEMs, Vitesse has designed the VSC7350 to be software- and pin-compatible with its existing MAC product portfolio. The VSC7350 is priced at $99 USD each in 10K quantities and packaged in a 27mm x 27mm FCBGA.
