World's Smallest Low Frequency Oscillator Offers Low Current

The world's smallest "all-in-one-package" miniature low frequency oscillator is now available from the Micro Crystal, division of the Swatch Group. This ultra-small size ceramic package has been designed to combine the company's smallest 32,768Hz timing crystal with a complete CMOS oscillator circuit. The OV-7604-C7 measures just 3.2 mm x 1.5 mm x 1.0mm in a ceramic SMD package. Its high stability and very low current consumption are ideal for today's high-performance portable equipment. The OV-7604-C7 is fully RoHS Compliant and 100% lead-free.

The wide operating voltage, from 5.5V down to 1.2V, ensures reliable operation-even on low battery. A maximum current consumption of 0.5µA at 3V supports long battery life. As such, it is up to 10 times lower than that of comparable products and 10,000 times lower than typical AT-based oscillators. A short start up time of 0.5 seconds (maximum) also contributes to low power consumption.

As more portable products require a stable timebase, there is a growing demand for low frequency oscillators. The all-in-one design of the OV-7604-C7 is a simple and highly reliable plug-and-play solution. It can help to significantly reduce development time and therefore time-to-market. Prototyping though final design can all be streamlined.

Because of its extremely small size and low power consumption, the OV-7604-C7 is a good fit for today's smallest devices. Applications include: cell phones, GPS, PDAs, both fixed and portable instruments, appliances, security equipment, computers and specialized communications products. Frequency tolerance is +/-20 ppm, with tighter tolerance optional. Operating temperature range is from ─40°C to +85°C, with a storage range of -55°C to +125°C standard. Shock resistance is up to 5,000g.

Micro Crystal's OV-7604-C7 Low Frequency Oscillators are available in production quantities, with six to ten week delivery. Priced at $1.65 each in 1,000 piece lots.
