Dow Corning® S Series LSRs Provide High Performance, Durability for Implants

July 17, 2007, Midland, Michigan, USA - New Dow Corning® S Series liquid silicone rubbers are designed, tested and supported for implants of 29 days or less. They also are appropriate for disposable applications in IV sets and catheters and for a variety of components, including valves and O-rings.

The chemistry of the S Series LSRs is similar to that of Dow Corning's existing LSRs and is consistent across the three new products-Dow Corning® S40 Liquid Silicone Rubber, Dow Corning® S50 Liquid Silicone Rubber, and Dow Corning® S70 Liquid Silicone Rubber. The framework of this chemistry set incorporates most of the same polymers but now optimizes the chemistry from a molecular level, resulting in a stronger, more consistent material.

"Silicones are one of the most extensively biotested materials used in the healthcare industry and our dedication and focus on healthcare remain second to none," said Linda Coughlin, Dow Corning global marketing, medical devices. "We're mindful of the regulatory hurdles and competitive threats facing today's healthcare market. As a result, we strive to bring the highest-performing, most cost-effective and appropriately tested materials to meet the needs of manufacturers and their customers."

S Series LSRs reach their ultimate physical properties upon initial cure with no drift.

The S Series LSRs are produced at Dow Corning's dedicated healthcare facility and manufactured to appropriate principles of Good Manufacturing Practices with complete traceability. This assures batch-to-batch consistency, complete batch records and histories, testing in accordance with ISO 10993-1 guidelines for external communicating devices and prolonged indirect blood path contact, and formal change control and notification process.

A global leader in silicon-based technology and innovation, offering more than 7,000 products and services, Dow Corning is equally owned by The Dow Chemical Company and Corning Incorporated.
