Ticona Introduces New Vectra® LCP G Series for High Temperature, Halogen Free E/E Applications

Shanghai, PR China, - Ticona Engineering Polymers today introduced its Vectra® G Series, two new cost-competitive halogen free liquid crystal polymer (LCP) grades with processing characteristics that avoid issues commonly encountered by electrical and electronic manufacturers that use challenging flame-retardant, high temperature nylons to mold components.

Ticona is showcasing its Vectra G Series grades during the three-day Chinaplas 2010 international exhibition in the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, Pudong, Shanghai, PR China: at the Ticona Booth, #W2B01; the Ticona technical seminar, "LCP Innovations in Connectors Industry, " from 10:30 to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, in room M22; and during the Ticona Press Conference from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, in room M14, where Thomas Petzel, global business line director - Vectra LCP, will present the Vectra G Series grades and halogen free solutions for green electronics.

"Vectra G141 and G441 are glass- and mineral-filled LCPs designed to help E/E customers meet demanding lead-free soldering and halogen-free requirements and steer clear of costly corrosion and maintenance issues," said Ed Hallahan, marketing manager - Vectra LCP. "Our new Vectra G Series builds on the success of our outstanding Vectra LCP advantages - inherently flame resistant, UL94 V-0, and halogen-free without the need of flame-retardant additives."

The 35 percent glass filled Vectra G141 and 35 percent mineral- and glass-filled Vectra G441 from Ticona are:

o Halogen free

o Inherently flame resistant without additives

o V-0 to 0.15 millimeters (UL listing expected May 2010)

o Potential drop-in solutions for small FR, HT nylon parts

In addition, both Vectra G grades offer E/E component manufacturers the opportunity to achieve excellent dimensional stability in thin-wall parts, even at higher temperatures - more than 260 degrees Celsius - where existing flame-retardant (FR) polymers struggle. They are designed to outperform traditional FR, high temperature (HT) polyamides (nylons) and thermoplastic polyesters (PBT) that require lead-free soldering resistance.

Additional processing advantages include:

o Faster molding cycle that FR, HT nylons

o No flash and mold deposit

o Lead-free reflow capable

o No moisture related blister issues vs. FR, HT nylons

o Longer tool life (non-corrosive in water heated molds)

o Lower machine and tool maintenance costs

o 25 percent regrind (UL listing expected May 2010)

"Customer comparison tests demonstrate the Vectra G grades can outperform nylon and PBT in processability, blister performance and dimensional stability," Hallahan said. "These new Vectra LCP grades from Ticona offer our E/E component manufacturing customers optimal part integration and cost reduction opportunities at a good cost position."

Vectra LCP is a family of high-performance polymers based on patented Ticona technology. Introduced 23 years ago, the product line has evolved to include innovative grades that keep pace with market needs for thinner walls, higher temperature resistance, higher production rates, lower overall part costs and recyclability.
