November 1, 2006 - Able to measure light levels from bright sunlight to dim moonlight, surface-mount (SMT) TSL238T interfaces directly to microprocessor and does not require external ADC. Waveform output frequency is directly proportional to light intensity, and output enable pin provides designer with option of feeding output of multiple devices into single microprocessor input port by enabling one TSL238T device at a time. Product is specified for operation over -25 to +70°C range.

TAOS, Inc. TSL238 High-Sensitivity Light-to-Frequency Converter is Now Available in 4-Pin "T" Surface Mount Package

Like the TAOS TSL238D High-Sensitivity Light-to-Frequency Converter, the TSL238T also combines ultra-low light level measurement with surface mount packaging benefits with the added benefits of having a smaller foot print and package height. The TSL238T can accurately measure a broad dynamic range of light levels from bright sunlight to dim moonlight. The TSL238T does not require an external analog-to-digital converter because its output is a waveform whose frequency is directly proportional to the light intensity, thereby enabling the device to interface directly to a microprocessor. This TAOS light-to-frequency converter also has an output enable pin that provides the designer with the option of feeding the output of multiple devices into a single microprocessor input port by enabling one TSL238T device at a time.

The TSL238T High-Sensitivity Light-to-Frequency Converter is well-suited to the following types of applications:
Medical applications which require measuring low levels of fluorescent, reflective and transmissive light such as that found in pulse oximetry systems;
Printer applications such as media detection;
Appliance applications such as turbidity sensing in dishwashers;
Automotive applications such as rain sensors and sunload sensors;
Games/toys applications which require light measurement over a broad dynamic range of light levels; and
LED intensity measurement.

The TSL238T is characterized for operation over a temperature range of -25 degrees Celsius to 70 degrees Celsius.

The TSL238T High-Sensitivity Light-to-Frequency Converter in a 4-pin "T" package is available from TAOS, Inc. and its authorized distributors. The TSL238T has a suggested resale price of $1.67 in 1,000-piece quantities.
