OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Announces Newest Addition to Golden DRAGON LED Family

Company to Highlight New Warm-White LED Solution at Electronica 2004

San Jose, CA – (November 9, 2004) – OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Inc. today announced the newest addition to its Golden DRAGON™ family of a high-performance light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The new warm-white Golden DRAGON combines familiar LED benefits such as long life, small die size and rugged design with a pleasant warm color, all in a compact package. Used wherever specialty lighting is needed, these versatile, general-lighting LEDs open up new applications in reading lights, mood lighting, display cabinets and car interiors. OSRAM will showcase the new warm-white Golden DRAGON LED during Electronica 2004 in Munich, Germany from November 9 – 12, 2004.

“The new warm-white Golden DRAGON LED reflects OSRAM’s commitment to providing lighting solutions that span numerous lighting applications in a wide variety of market segments,” said Ellen Sizemore, director of LED products for OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. “OSRAM’s latest warm-white lighting offering is yet another innovative solution that is both practical and pleasing to the eye. We are delighted with the results of our efforts.”

While conventional LEDs offer a “cold” light, the newest LEDs have a warmer color temperature closer to that of incandescent and halogen lamps. This is achieved by changing the product’s converter mix. White light is normally produced when a blue chip is combined with a yellow converter phosphor. By adding a red converter phosphor, a warmer white tone is achieved.

About the Golden DRAGON

Announced in March 2003, OSRAM’s Golden DRAGON LEDs deliver a concentrated light point with a high degree of efficiency (optical efficiency is 20 lm/W), all in a compact package (1.8 mm high and typically fitting inside an enclosure measuring 6 x 7 mm). While individually larger in size than conventional LEDs, six traditional LEDs would be required to match the lighting intensity of a single Golden DRAGON LED.

The compact LED offers a powerful 1- to 2-watt point light source and is manufactured using standard surface-mount technology (SMT) soldering techniques, opening up huge design potential for light developers and designers, as no special or additional production equipment is required for manufacturing. This LED additionally provides critical reliability, meeting even the stringent demands of the automotive industry. The Golden DRAGON LED is designed to operate in temperatures ranging from -40 to +100°C, and it can also withstand frequent temperature changes. Even the extreme demands of a tropical climate do not affect operation. The Golden DRAGON LED lifetime can additionally exceed 20,000 hours, depending on operating and ambient conditions.
