Toyota Introduces New Line of High-Performance Electric Walkie Stacker Lift Trucks

Irvine, Calif. (August 14, 2002) - Toyota Material Handling, U.S.A., Inc. (TMHU) today introduced its new state-of-the-art line of Walkie Stacker lift trucks. The new series of electric forklifts is comprised of seven models, including straddle, counterbalanced and reach stackers with capacities ranging from 2,000 to 4,000 pounds. Each is engineered with Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET) controller system and SEM (Separately Excited Motor) drive technologies, resulting in increased battery efficiency, stepless acceleration and improved operator control.

Toyota's new ergonomically advanced Walkie Stacker models are ideally suited for a variety of pedestrian truck applications, from manufacturing environments and retail store operations to general transportation and product distribution. Maneuverable, with heavy-duty wheels and a durable frame, they deliver smooth and precise performance in locations where stand-up or sit-down rider lift trucks are too large. The new Walkie Stackers expand Toyota's broad line of Walkie lift trucks to include nearly every application.

"At Toyota, we are committed to providing the quality and value that our customers expect," said Dr. Shankar Basu, president and CEO of TMHU. "Our new line of Walkie Stacker forklifts exemplifies this effort, with superior engineering and design that results in increased efficiency, productivity and comfort, and overall cost-of-ownership savings."

Careful consideration of operator comfort has led to a number of ergonomic features for the new Walkie Stacker line. Forklift operators will appreciate the multi-function control handle with oversized dual thumb wheels and buttons, allowing easy activation of all controls with either hand. For added comfort, hand grips are angled to fit the natural hand contour and reduce fatigue. A high visibility mast with wide channels provides the operator with a clear view of the fork tips and a wider work area for increased safety, load handling confidence and efficiency.

A fully programmable drive system enhances operability by offering precise control of the vehicle and reducing the potential for load damage. Electric lift and lower controls are equipped with a pressure-compensated valve for constant lowering under all conditions, enhancing safety and further reducing the risk of product damage.

In order to streamline maintenance and minimize downtime, the design incorporates several ease-of-service features. For example, a steel access door provides convenient, tool-free access to all major components for inspection and maintenance. Routine service requirements are reduced and battery life is extended with the MOSFET control system, because no contactors are used to control the SEM drive motor. For added convenience, maintenance personnel may easily access complete diagnostics with a hand-held analyzer to quickly identify service needs.

Toyota's new Walkie Stacker lift trucks, backed by Toyota's extensive Class III warranty, are available now.
