Purpose-Built Lift For Servicing Gimbles In Nuclear Facilities

(Grimsby, ON April 29, 2004) Handling Specialty engineered and manufactured this unique lift system for servicing gimbles. The gimble is a device that is mounted to the underside of an overhead crane in the reactor tube area of a nuclear power plant. It is used to remove old fuel rods and insert new ones into the reactor.

The removal of the gimble assembly from the underside of an overhead crane requires precise, vertical and horizontal positioning. Handling Specialty designed a dual lift system with a small lift on top for carrying and positioning the gimble and a large, mobile personnel lift on the bottom for moving the gimble from the service area to the reactor. When the lifts are in position for installing or removing a gimble, the wheels lock allowing the lower lift to rise into position. The second, smaller lift then rises to locate the gimble in the x-y plane for mounting to the crane.

The system’s lower lift is hydraulic while the upper lift is mechanical to ensure accurate positioning. Also included is a 7 by 14 foot platform, which expands to 9 by 14. Other features of this 6,000 pound capacity lift include high-tolerance poly-faced wheels, aluminum platform extenders and an integral power pack.
